Maximus X Hero: I-7 8700k does hit Turbo Frequency of 4.7Ghz!

My Intel I7 8700K processor does not hit the Turbo Frequency of 4.7Ghz. Shouldn’t this processor by default reach 4.7Ghz?

In BIOS under the Extreme Tweaker tab I have listed:
Target CPU Turbo-Mode Frequency: 4700Mhz
Target CPU @ AVX Frequency: 4700Mhz
Target DRAM Frequency: 2133Mhz
Target Cache Frequency: 4400Mhz
ASUS Multicore Enhancement is set to AUTO.

In the windows the cores jump around at different speeds between 4.4Ghz. 4.5Ghz 4.6Ghz and my other lower speeds as well, but I don’t think I’ve seen it hit 4.7Ghz.
Now, the crazy thing is when I run AIDA64 Stress test the CPU cores all drop down to 4.3Ghz. I have switched Power Options from Balanced (recommended) to Power Saver, but no luck. XMP profile is not enabled, as far as i understand this should work right out of the box (correct me if I am wrong).

Why do the cores drop down to 4.3Ghz? Shouldn’t the cores all hit 4.7Ghz? What can I do to fix this?

Make sure you only check the "Stress CPU" box when you run AIDA64. Also, this could be due to the AVX negative offset setting (above zero)

Hi Snakeyes, I have everything set to defaults which is 0 for the AVX negative offset. Thanks for trying to help.

So based on the thread above I changed the CPU Core Ratio to “Sync All Cores” and now when I run AIDA64 Stress test all cores hit the boost turbo speed of 4.7Ghz!

However, the Vcore jumps back and forth between 1.376V and 1.392V, which give Temps at low to mid 80s. That make me feel super uncomfortable to run Temps and Vcore that high.

I tried setting CPU Core/Cache Voltage from Auto to “Adaptive Mode”, but it had same results, the Temps and Vcoe did not drop.

Any recommendations how I can lower the Vcore to safer levels?

The one thing that would definitely help, would be to de-lid your CPU, unfortunately that's not everyone's cup of tea and has a measure of risk. You could try re-seating your Corsair watercooler block using good thermal paste (assuming you haven't already done that). Also keep in mind that while stress testing for stability is worth the exercise, most if not all of typical activities including most gaming will not cause your system to run at those temperatures and as such leaving it as is might not be as big a problem as you might think.

As Snake Eyes said....delidding will lower those temps....have delidded 3 chips thus far without issue....another factor is a push / pull configuration with ur rad using quality SP fans.I would also use a manual vcore to lower that voltage....would suggest a starting point of 1.28v...plus/minus

I'm pretty sure its stock speed out of the box is 3.7 base...4.7 in turbo. I have the same chip and that's what the specs say. So your mobo must of activated automatically. (Mine was, maximus x formula) and if you want more stable reads on your CPU, deactivate intels speedstep and c-state (experts only) then your readouts shouldn't be so jumpy but you will consume more power at idle

Are you saying try to run the stress test at that manual Vcore of 1.28V? If it fails (do you mean get a BSOD) then try a slightly higher Vcore (keep doing it until id does not fail (BSOD)?

How much of a Vcore increment increase should i try each time? For example, if a Vcore of 1.28V fails, should i next time try 1.29V?

The advertised 4.7 GHz turbo speed is only available in single threaded scenarios. As you mentioned, when running a multi-threaded stress test it will drop to 4.3 GHz. Unless you change to "Sync all cores", which is technically overclocking the CPU. https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3077-explaining-coffee-lake-turbo-8700k-8600k

In order to lower the CPU Core Voltage you can select a different "SVID Behavior" in BIOS, but it might not be 100% stable on all CPUs.
