Help me OC my 8700k to 5ghz for a noob

KillaBandit

Here is my build below. I would like to see 5ghz. I have tried, and seen them core temps hit 100c with maximum heat test of prime95, and backed off. That was when I tried 1.35v and watching a youtube video discussed here before with settings. I am running at stock and 1.25v right now and stable to keep it cool till I figure this out. I know the Asus boards have a tendency to push too much V through the memory and cpu. So would like to get 5ghz, and have it not so hot either if thats possible. I am not delid. XMP is enabled for 3200.

Since I am a noob, and not very good with Asus boards, please tell me where to go to adjust the settings and what to adjust too.

KillaBandit,
Very nice build, excellent choice of hardware
Please post screenshots of Stress test with CPU-Z and HWmonitor or HWInfo, showing core speeds, temperatures and voltages, and screenshots of bios settings that have been changed, idle temps and volts, load temps and volts, with and without XMP enabled
What are your ambient temps
Screenshots posted not links please

There are overclock presets in your bios for 5Ghz, I believe 24/7 manual voltage and 24/7 adaptive voltage presets

Also there are many other threads here on 8700K overclocking, bios settings are very similar on X Formula, Code, Hero boards, maybe search threads here for examples

I followed this video as a guide and got 5.0ghz stable right away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoUtA7DKXhU
Skip to 5:02 mark for initial BIOS settings

Further details on my particular BIOS settings
AVX negative offset -1 not -3
CPU 1.35v
My Ram is 16GB G-skill TridentZ 3400mhz I'm using the XMP profile
CPU core cache min max is 42

Good luck!

It looks like your voltage is scaling very high creating high temps and possibly some kind of throttling

Are you using manual, adaptive or offset for Vcore?

Try setting SVID Behavior to best case scenario

72930

Adaptive Vcore, 1.35, no offset

72931

CPU LL to 5 or 6

72932

Test again to check for vcore and temps

Here is with not changing anything on Real Bench.

Here are the results from Real Bench.

CPU Temp: Max 72c - Min: 33c

Then I followed this guys instructions and my score went way down. http://www.overclock.net/forum/5-intel-cpus/1639998-i7-8700k-overclock-results-settings-2.html#post2...

And it seemed to hurt my performance in Real Bench? I noticed during the sound playback, when my cpu hit 100% load, it went from 5ghz to 3.9 ghz.

Any ideas whats going on?

Not to be disrespectful but personally I rarely watch these videos, I prefer to read articles, reviews and view screenshots of information

Someone will probably take the time to follow posted links and guess what settings you have made but without actual screenshots of your bios settings posted and some kind of monitoring software I hesitate to do so, it's difficult enough helping someone remotely, the easier you make it to help the more likely you are of getting help

Tried that video, and this is all it got me below. But I was able to consistently keep 4.9-5ghz and no higher than 83-94c it seemed. Well, if you want me to try some different settings than the video, I can reset it, let me know what I should change then.

Your VCore seems a bit high for a 5.0 ghz overclock....suggest you lower your VCore to 1.28v manually with LL6....run Prime95 for a while...if your your not stable adjust VCore in increments of .50 until you reach stability....you should be able to attain stability in the 1.30v range....Once stable...I would suggest lowering your VCCIO and VCCSA voltages as I believe they are too high...my suggestion is to start with 1.15 volts for each...and work your way up unable you again achieve stability......You should see a difference in your temps as well.

not wanting to jump in and hijack but just did some o/c on my hero 8700K ( 49 at 1.34)

strange think was when running RealBench CPU-Z showed multiplier at 46 but when I run cinebench it shows as 49 (4900MHz)...temps just under 80

1562 cinebench score

will_s, sounds like you have an AVX offset of -3, RealBench Ver. 2.56 uses AVX
