Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 - Cooling Fan Replacement and Repasting [GX701LWS]
This video demonstrates a cooling fan replacement and thermal repasting in an Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 Laptop (GX701LWS).
The Problem: The GPU cooling fan (left side) was making a strange noise whenever it turned on, oscillating between on and off. In Armoury Crate, I noticed the GPU fan was stuck at 0 rpm, then suddenly spiking to 5000 rpm for a split second before dropping back to 0 rpm. These quick spikes created a loud, unusual noise, and this noise was always present whenever the fan was running. The GPU fan was defective.
After researching what to do (and, helpfully, what not to do!), I decided to buy a new GPU cooling fan, thermal paste, and cooling pads to tackle the repair myself. The video captures the whole process—mistakes included!
A better version with comments and subtitles is coming soon, with added tips to help you avoid the same errors. But for now, this is what I have!
⚠️ Be CAREFUL doing it yourself!
Please exercise caution if you’re attempting this repair yourself. Even as a computer scientist, I ran into issues and would have came close to “killing my computer".
I hope this helps someone! Good luck with your repairs, everyone!
