I heard some people changed their 60 hz to 75 hz and up to a 100 but in the long run could it cause damage?

A cool story:

When I was like 10 we had this 19" Inch CRT and I went to the settings that changed the refresh rate to 120 Hertz. It started smoking and we took it back to the store. I had no idea at the time that was the reason.

Do not do this. Its Pointless.
GTX970M at the most part does not give you framerate above 60 so its pointless and may harm your monitor.

You can go up to 80 or 90Hz, it won't harm you monitor, Gsync monitor are 75hz out of the box so you can go a bit higher as long as you don't stay always at the max your monitor is capable of. and yes the 970m is powerful enough to get many games between 70 and 90 fps and just to have a smooth desktop, videos, and fluidity in apps it's like day and night. If you're scared just try 75Hz and you will directly see the difference in games you won't go back to 60Hz
