I think I already know the answer to this but I have to be sure. will this only take an "M" key m.2 or can it take a "B" key also? I really hope i haven't made a horrible mistake...

M keyed slots support M or B&M devices. Won't support B key.

This is the first time I've been able to build a state-of-the-art system and M.2 wasn't a thing during my last build. I used PC parts picker to make things easier and when i entered 2 WD Blue 1TB M.2 drives and a 500GB Samsung 970 evo. It didn't show any compatibility issues. The parts started coming in and the MB manual said the riser only supported "M" key and i freaked out. The WD Blue is listed as a M-B so I assume this is what you mean. Thanks.

Yes, your drives have both notches so they will fit.
