my first sli setup.. using Maximus XI Formula. pcie question

so, when i use two gpu's in sli, doe the max xi formula limit both to x8 now? or are they both x16 still? it seems to be x8 on both cards. any help would be appreciated. thanks

thanks. is this limitation caused by z390? by the 9900k? just becuase x16 for both lanes isn't needed? curious. thanks!

Yes...to run sli 16x you would need to switch to another platform ie: x299

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there any difference given that even a 2080 ti can't saturate 8 PCIE 3.0 lanes. I recall reading this when I was looking into getting my Formula XI and a pair of 2080 TI's:
