Maximus X Hero: M.2 and SATA questions

Hi everyone,

The manual and documentation states about the M.2 sockets:

* When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will
be disabled.

* When the M.2_2 Socket 3 is operating in PCIEX4 mode, SATA port 5, 6
will be disabled.

Just to be clear about the SSD M.2 sockets. If I connect my SSD M.2 drive in socket M.2_1 Socket 3 I can no longer use SATA port 1because it automatically becomes disabled, correct?

So If I connect two SSD M.2 drives I loose 3 of the 6 SATA ports, correct?

I connected my Samsung 970 Pro SSD drive in M.2_1 Socket 3 there I guess my SATA port 1 is useless… Does anyone know which SATA port is port #1? I cannot make it out from the manual or looking at the board itself.

Thanks

Hi Moises,

You lose the port 1 only if you operate on SATA mode (M.2_1) and you lose SATA ports 5 & 6 if you operate M.2_2 in PCIE X4 mode.

Your 970 Pro is an M.2 NMVe running on PCIe so no issue with SATA port 1.

The manual is pretty clear on the SATA port diagram.

Hi,

I did some extra research and just realized that I should configure in BIOS my Samsung 970 Pro to run in PCIE mode since that's what will give it optimal performance. Just got to figure out if its an easy as setting the 970 Pro to PCIE mode and if there's additional settings for it.

It would automatically run PCIe so probably X2 / X4 config is the only thing you'll need to do.
