Maximus X Hero: Do i need to install: Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver?

Hi everyone!

I just purchased the Maximus X Hero, yeah baby! Super excited!!! I have a quick question, I’m downloading the drivers from Asus website and I saw under SATA the following driver: Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver.

I have a SSD M.2 drive, in which Windows 10 will be installed on; will not setup RAID or anything fancy.

Do I need to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver? Does it benefit the system to install it? Should I install it?

As I understand, it's not really needed if you're not going with a RAID setup.

I've never installed it in my non-RAID builds. Maybe others will chime in here with more RSTD experience.

I noticed your sig, bios 1604 for the Maximus X Hero? 1401 should be the latest unless I'm missing something.

That is the BIOS for my old Maximus V Formula MB. Sorry for the confusion, I didn't completely update my signature, still need to update the rest of it.

Of course there is an interest in installing them even if there is no RAID, they get you the latest drivers of your SATA AHCI controller :

Ok, so there is a benefit if we install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver even if we are not setting up RAID! If the SATA AHCI controller's driver is updated by installing it, then sounds like we all should install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver...

Install it regardless. There is more going on than raid here. IRST covers the NVME and AHCI controllers and how access, power and tables are written.

My Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD drive has a NVMe driver posted on the Samsung website. This would be something totally different when you say: " IRST covers the NVMe and AHCI controllers"?

I other words I should install both the Samsung NVMe driver and IRST (since it generally provides certain benefits), correct?

Exactly !

It's not vital to, but is recommended to install the driver itself over the generic MS driver, as you will generally get somewhat improved performance.
