M.2-1 Configuration in BIOS

Beerlord

I have the Maximus X Hero MB and a 970 EVO 500gb drive in the M.2 slot but when I look in the BIOS to see if there are any settings, I only see 2 places for any possible changes and I'm not at all familiar with them.
One is listed as the M.2-1 Configuration with choices for Auto-SATA-PCIe (and is set to Auto)
The other is M.2-2 PCIe Bandwidth Control and is set to X2 but there is an option to set to X4.

So, what should these be set too?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Last night I changed my EVO to PCIe, things were fine all night. When I woke, my system was not in sleep mode and was almost frozen. Things took an ice age to open. Even slower than before. I checked temps and all were fine excpet the EVO was at 44C. I've heard 50 is as high as you want to go. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.
I rebooted and again, things are fine. I'll just have to see if things slow down again but is it me or does it seem like a temperature problem? GPU and CPU are perfect as are the mechanical drives.

Where did you read that 50C was as high as you want to go? I've not seen that - it seems very low. Also, what program are you using for that temp reading?

I am sure I read it on a Newegg review (not that it means anything from them) but decided to look and found this on guru3d.com:
During our test benchmarks stress tests with a high-stress workload, we monitor the SSD temperature. The unit idles at roughly 45 Degrees C, the peak stress temperature measured hovers at roughly 72 Degrees C. So yeah, motherboard m.2. heatsink cooling remains recommended to prevent throttling.

So, I guess I'm more than good as I never saw mine get about 47C. Sorry I threw in some BS there.
I'm using CPUID and Open Hardware Monitor.

Also read this:Samsung claims the 970 units are even less susceptible to thermal throttling thanks to a combination of higher performance before they throttle and a slightly higher temperature limit.

Hi!

Good to see your discussion!

I´m also using a z590 E, 11900K, 32 GB RAM, and want to run my 980 Pro at full speed. Right now, my highest value from CrystalDisk is under 1800, which agrees with the Samsung Magician software - which also reports PCIe Gen. 4 x 1 (!).

I would really like to see read speeds approaching 7000 MB/s.
Samsung Magician Shows Rapid mode is not supported.
Confirmed "genuine".
TRIM status is ON.
Full Power Mode is ON.

No other storage on the system, Just the one 1TB Samsung 980Pro on the system.
Not even a graphics card yet - There is a 1080 on the shelf, waiting...

I've spent a LOT of time in advanced BIOS Settings. I would REALLY appreciate the right BIOS settings!

In the nicest possible way, if you don´t know what you are talking about, save it!
All BIOS, firmware and drivers are updated.
I´ve read the manual. It is an 11th gen processer, not a 10th, the SSD is in the primary, optimal, slot 1, and Windows 10 Pro works just fine. It is not a Raid system.

How do I get from 1700 MB/s to 7000 MB/s, perhaps from PCIe Gen. 4 x 1 to PCIe Gen. 4 x 4?

Thanks in advance!

I was wondering the same thing. But here's another question. If I have a Samsung 970 EVO M.2 in the main slot on my Maximus X Code, how should I config my other 3 mechanical HDDs? Does it matter what Sata 6 port I have them plugged into? I want the most performance possible of course. I also have my 1080ti in the first pcie lane and a ROG RaidR Express 240GB ssd in the last Pcie slot. Thanks

You can connect your 3 HDDs to sata ports to 1 2 3 or 4 as ports 5 and 6 are disabled when you use an M.2 drive in pci-express mode x4.
As for the last Pcie slot it runs max at Pcie 3.0 x4 the lanes come from the chipset .
So with this config you should get full Pcie 3.0 x16 for your 1080ti in the first pcie slot.

In windows use gpu-z to make sure your 1080ti is running Pcie 3.0 x16 and CrystalDiskInfo to check the status and transfer rates for all your drives.

These are the CrystalDiskMark results for my SSD (970 Pro 1TB): the 4KiB results seem poor (I think?!) - any idea why that would be...?

Your results are just fine , don't forget that it is your OS drive and background tasks can interfere with results.
Plus don't forget about all the cpu spectre and meltdown patches that degraded performance.

To Beerlord operating temps for the drive are up to 70c before it starts throttling.
I recommend you use HWinfo as it shows the nand and conntroller temps, if they are to high you will need some passive are active cooling.

They're actually pretty good results

4K is about on par, You want fast go Intel Optane drive. A lot of people concentrate on the sequential speeds but thats not where the performance comes from unless you just write large files to the drive all day. As an OS or app drive the speed comes from 4k Q1T1 random as most of what its accessing is the tiny 4k dll files.
