Intel Core i7-8086K CPU - Bios Incompatibility?

Hello,

I currently have my Maximus X Apex on one of the early release BIOSes. Will I be able to drop in an 8086K and have it work right away? Or do we need to wait for a BIOS update before swapping in the 8086K CPU?

Thanks!

Have let HQ know. Will report back.

Edit: please set the min cache ratio to 8X, this should cure the problem.

Thanks, setting a min 8 / max 45 worked... voltage drops to .0736

hope this will this be fixed in a future bios update?

You don’t need to set the max cache ratio. The voltage drops due to the min ratio.

the max cache defaults to 8 the minute I change the min to 8, cannot set it back to Auto either so I have to enter a manual max value.

If I don't the max stays at 8 and impacts performance in windows... e.g cinebench drops from 1400+ to 900.

I have tested the 8086k with the last 4 bios updates and the chip works fine ...Only issue that I have encountered is that I get a ME Firmware Update was unsuccessful message upon reboot...once that passes...boots into Windows..Np...with the Asus Maximus X Code board

That's odd. Min should change with max, not vice versa. In any case, at least you're up and running.

Is it really worth the $$$ for one of these 5GHZ 8086k chips since I already have an 8700K? or are you all doing this because you can and it's limited time? prestige ?

I had the 8700k...delidded and was able to achieve 5.1ghz P95 stable @ 1.376v....but like an enthusiast....want more..lol...I got the 8086k...also delidded....this time with copper HS applied...out of the box I can achieve 5.2 ghz with 1.328v P95 stable and and now working towards 5.3ghz with 1.408v.

Sticking with what der8auer said here, wanted to get one as well but fat chance that we get a couple chips shipped to my country; basically 8086k is an ultra binned 8700k by Intel. Although it guarantees "stock" boost of 5GHz, it wasn't able to break the 7,3GHz world record set by an 8700k. So like any chip, there's still the silicone lottery factor in play.

Most physically unaltered 8700k can reach 5,0GHz with a good air cooler/AIO, albeit with mostly unacceptable daily usage temps; most delidded samples could easily go 5,3GHz.

If you could do it and have the means, go for it! I'd personally be very happy to run an 8086k at stock clocks undervolted to maybe 1,25v-1,28v... I could only wish for that with my 8700k 🙂
