Primary HDD is not recognized when restarting, only when powering off then on

As the title says, I recently built a new PC and the primary HDD is not recognized by the BIOS when rebooting. If I shut down then start up it shows up just fine. Neither the optical drive nor secondary HDD have this issue. I have tried updating the BIOS, doing a full format of the disc, reinstalling the OS, and using different SATA data and power cables to no avail. I believe the problem starts when installing one of the ASUS drivers and I suspect the chipset driver is the culprit. Is there anything I can do to fix this irritant? I imagine the drivers all are valuable to have installed.

Here are my potentially pertinent system specs with both HDDs using NTFS under GPT:

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero
Primary HDD: Western Digital Black 2 TB WD2003FZEX
Secondary HDD: Western Digital Black 6 TB WD6001FZWX
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-14 F
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2×8GB DDR4 3466 MHz C16
PSU: Seasonic PRIME 850 W Titanium

hi Arilus Welcome to the ROG forum.

You can try some steps for troubleshooting
Make Sure the BIOS is updated 0906 vesion
Change SATA Cables and SATA Ports
perhaps can try swap PSU for troubleshooting

The chipset drivers are from Intel so ASUS hasn't messed with them. Try using the ones from the Intel website. Sometimes the ASUS support page is behind in driver versions.

I appreciate the suggestions but unfortunately have tried all of them already though I neglected to mention these. I updated the BIOS to 0801 and then to 0906 when it was released. I attempted using different SATA ports with different SATA data and power cables as well as having only the drive in question connected with no change. I tried an old Antec Neo Eco 520W PSU I have that's still going strong with no change. I also tried to find more recent Z270 drivers directly from Intel but as best as I can tell the drivers ASUS provides are up to date.

From what I read at the WD forum this is a common issue with WD black drives with many complaining of the same issue. Apparently turning on hot swap for these problematic drives can help to fix the issue. There is also a registry setting that has an effect plus a couple other solutions listed but no real fix from WD as yet. You should read through this WD forum thread for more information about this ongoing issue.

Thank you, chevell65! After I was satisfied there wasn't a problem with the disc I figured the HDD was not the issue and hadn't even considered a firmware bug as the culprit. I read through the thread you linked then enabled hot plugging for its SATA port and it fixed the issue. And now that I know it's a firmware issue with WD and not a problem with the motherboard I know where I can keep an eye out for an actual fix in the future rather than a workaround.

Yeah I'm wondering if WD will follow through on a more legitimate fix but it's good that enabling hot swap made it work for now. :cool:
