VIII Gene - No USB 3.1

CaptOveur
Level 7
I ordered myself a USB 3.1 Type C drive to mess around with. But now I discovered that the USB type C and A ports on the board are not working at all.

Here's what I have tried so far.

  • Plugged the USB C drive into USB 3 port - Worked
  • Plugged USB 3 drive into USB C port - Nothing
  • Verified that the ports were enabled in the BIOS
  • Attempted to install Asmedia USB3.1/3.0 Driver V1.16.26.1 - Would not run at all, even as admin
  • Updated to BIOS 3703
  • Attempted to install Asmedia USB3.1/3.0 Driver V1.16.26.1 again - Nothing happened.
  • Attempted to update firmware using the ASMedia USB 3.1 FW update tool - Which didn't do anything either...

What's my next step here?

Hello Capt0veur

Are you using windows 10 ?

Windows 10 is the only operating system that supports usb 3.1

Yup. Latest build of Windows 10 Pro 1709. And this is the drive that I am trying to use.

I should have mentioned both in the OP...

Thank you

Windows 10 installs all the necessary drivers.

Check device manager for any yellow triangles.

The controller shows up. I'm not sure if that was the case before I started what I put in the OP. I forgot to check... But the ports are still dead and won't recognize any gen USB.

Device manager looks good and shows no sign of missing drivers.

Reinstalling windows might fix it, or I'm wondering if the ports are faulty.

Have the Type A and C ports worked before ?

Never used those ports until tonight...

But now I can't even get into Windows. I get a BSOD right after the desktop appears, or before the desktop appears in Safe Mode. It started doing that after I tried reinstalling the controller driver. But when I tried to reinstall the driver by pointing device manager to the folder containing the drivers that I downloaded from Asus it threw an error saying something along the lines of the driver can't be installed because the device is malfunctioning. So I closed the window and tried to apply the driver again by pointing it just to Win10 drivers folder. This time it said the proper driver was already installed. And when I closed the driver window the 3.1 controller disappeared from the device manager. So I rebooted...

And now my install is FUBAR. It won't boot into Safe Mode and apparently I don't have any system restore points. I've had this build up and running flawless for about a year and this is first not OC related issue that I have had. Luckily I have a good backup system! So I can restore to an image that was taken this weekend.

I guess I just won't be using the 3.1 ports...

Try reinstalling windows, it seems the operating system may be corrupted.

Let windows take care of the drivers and see if the A and C ports work.

Meh. I don't need the 3.1 ports. And I definitely don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows right now. I might throw a spare SSD in this weekend and put a clean install on that and see what happens. If this install is corrupt its only related to the 3.1 drivers. Everything else works perfectly.

And I was able to get the machine to boot back up by disabling the 3.1 controller in the BIOS and manually deleting the driver. Here's the error that I was seeing when try assign a driver. The device disappears from the device manager after closing that window.

All right

Yeah I suspect either windows is corrupt or the Type A/C ports aren't working.

Give us an update when you install windows on your other SSD.

The only thing I do after installing windows 10 is update the graphics driver.
