Updating the BIOS: What did I do wrong?

Barbara917

1) Downloaded the MAXIMUS VIII GENE BIOS 1202 for Windows 10 64-bit from here:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-GENE/HelpDesk_Download/

2) Extracted the .zip file.

3) Renamed the file M8G.CAP

4) Copied the file to the root directory of FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive.

5) Restarted to BIOS

6) From the Tools tab used the Asus EZ Flash 3 Utility

7) Selected the USB drive and found the M8G.CAP file on the flash drive and updated the BIOS

😎 Sat frozen in fear for several minutes that something would go wrong and my motherboard might be bricked.

9) System finally rebooted to Windows successfully.

10) Restarted to BIOS again. BIOS reports that my version number is 701 x64 Build Date 8/24/2015

I checked and double checked the file I downloaded from Asus.

I downloaded the 1202 BIOS from Global yet my BIOS reports the version 701 x64 Build Date 8/24/2015

Bewildered.

Hello Barbara917

Try the bios flashback method and see if you have success, here is a guide you can follow.

You are correct in renaming the bios file to M8G.CAP

Thank you for the reply Nate152. I did as you suggested. When I look in the MAIN menu of the UEFI it still reports the BIOS version as 701x64.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Please explain in detail what you saw.

While you were in the EZ Flash Utility, did you see the progress bar at the bottom? Did it finish and tell you that the system would restart? After the restart did you see a black screen with white text stating that iROG is updating or something along those lines?

Yes to your first two questions. I was distracted and didn't watch everything. When I looked back, I saw the System appear to turn off and restart at least 3 separate times. Twice it said the same thing that it was updating the BIOS please don't power off or something to the effect. Seeing that occur twice in sequence, I was sweating that something was failing. The third time the message changed to updating the ME firmware?? My memory is vague as to exact wording.

The second time, using the BIOS flashback button on the rear I/O panel from a powered off system, I first had to figure out the correct USB port for the flash drive. My eyes aren't great and I needed a flashlight to see the lettering denoting the flashback USB port. I decided to check my manual before proceeding which confused things further because page 2-12 has the wrong USB port labeled for flashback. Page 2-13 specifies the same USB as marked on the rear I/O so I decided to go with that one. I depressed the flashback button for a few seconds until it started blinking them watched the USB stick. It has an LED that indicates activity. I saw the LED blinking so I knew the USB was being read. The Flashback procedure was much faster than the BIOS Flashback Utility.

I have also noticed that the BIOS has been taking a lot of time to start up. I have Windows 10 installed on a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO. Windows boots in seconds yet the BIOS takes as much time as if it is loading from a slow HDD.

/edit to add: I will add that I don't update the BIOS unless I have a specific reason because of the inherent risk. I don't believe in fixing something that isn't broken. The fact is that I don't KNOW that I need this update. It in fact is an experiment. I am having an error attempting to play a game - SPORE. http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?81375-Maximus-VIII-Gene-This-Program-Cannot-Be-Executed-Err... I know you said that you didn't believe that a BIOS could block a game but I have done enough research on Google that this error is occurs in Windows 10 on both Asus and Gigabyte Skylake motherboards and that both Asus and Gigabyte updated some of their BIOS's to address the error. The only other option is for the author of the game - EA - to issue a patch which is highly unlikely in the case of SPORE. There are threads on the EA forums in which Crysis 3 actually got a patch for this issue and there was also talk about how Overclockers.net was not able to benchmark Crysis 3 on Skylake motherboards when they first came out.

In which part of the BIOS are you looking at for the BIOS version? Can you post a screenshot? Plug an USB pendrive and use the F12 key. Also grab a screenshot of the Motherboard tab in CPU-Z for me. 🙂

CPU-Z is throwing errors and not working right. It freezes at 75% but I managed to get this.

I also decided to throw in a screenshot of the file name that I downloaded. Note that I downloaded it twice to make sure I got the right one.

Can we update via Internet ? I am new with rog mobo ! I own a Viii hero . Thanks

Barbara917, was the BIOS the only file on the USB pendrive? Also what model is your USB pendrive?

Yes, you can but personally I would update via the EZ Flash Utility or the USB BIOS Flashback function.

Sandisk Cruzer Glide. No. It is loaded up with drivers for my Maximus VI Gene and also has the M6G.CAP on it. Is that a thing? Does the CAP file need to be the only thing on the drive? I thought that was the point of the very specific file name - so that flashback could find it. I don't recall that when I flashed my Maximus VI I am pretty sure those other drivers were there. Plus when I used the Bios Flashback Utility I was able to select the file by name. I remember seeing both the M6G.CAP and the M8G.CAP.

You know. I am going to read your mind and predict where you are going with this question. I will have to find a stick with nothing on it and get back to you.
