Updating the BIOS: What did I do wrong?

1) Downloaded the MAXIMUS VIII GENE BIOS 1202 for Windows 10 64-bit from here:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-GENE/HelpDesk_Download/

2) Extracted the .zip file.

3) Renamed the file M8G.CAP

4) Copied the file to the root directory of FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive.

5) Restarted to BIOS

6) From the Tools tab used the Asus EZ Flash 3 Utility

7) Selected the USB drive and found the M8G.CAP file on the flash drive and updated the BIOS

😎 Sat frozen in fear for several minutes that something would go wrong and my motherboard might be bricked.

9) System finally rebooted to Windows successfully.

10) Restarted to BIOS again. BIOS reports that my version number is 701 x64 Build Date 8/24/2015

I checked and double checked the file I downloaded from Asus.

I downloaded the 1202 BIOS from Global yet my BIOS reports the version 701 x64 Build Date 8/24/2015

Bewildered.

Correct. 😛

Please use an empty USB pendrive with only the BIOS file on it. If possible, use pendrives with smaller capacities. Also try to avoid those ones that come with a hidden partition.

It sounds like it updated the first time since it went thru the sequences mentioned, but apparently not, you only need to rename the bios file if using the flashback method, not if using the EzFlash method inside the bios.
But yes you may be best off with a clean USB stick, try re-downloading the bios again in case you somehow got a corrupted file, I use an 8 or 16 GB USB 2.0 Kingston drive myself, I have several USB sticks that just don't work for this purpose, I don't know why but they don't.

Thank you, Chino.

I sent my daughter to Target to pick me up a thumb drive. They were just about sold out and this Emtec 8GB was the only one they had.

And I also want to let you know that successfully updating the BIOS to 1202 enabled my SPORE game to work in Windows 10. I did not need to downgrade to Windows 7. I know that it is unlikely that you will have many people coming through here inquiring about SPORE but the 8016 error also affects games like Crysis and GTA 4 which some may encounter problems with if they do not update the BIOS. I will update that thread in case someone is googling for how to fix the 8016 error for Maximus motherboards.

I upgraded bios 2 times using ezflash method inside bios, it let's you choose what file to use and can use any usb port you want to. Worked well.

Yes. That was my first attempt to update. I selected the correct file from my thumbdrive which was then connected to a random non- ROG connect port. It didn't work and my BIOS was not updated to the BIOS I selected by name. The only explanation for this was that the BIOS file was on a thumbdrive that was full of many other driver files. It was not until I put the BIOS on a drive that was empty that it worked. I am not saying it couldn't have worked OK for you. As my memory serves me that method worked just fine for me when I flashed my Maximus VI BIOS. However, this experience has demonstrated for me that that method has the potential to fail and create all the aggravation that I went through the last couple of days. In future, I will remember to keep the BIOS I am flashing on an empty thumb drive.

I had 2 bios files on thumbdrive when i updated it, 802 version and 1202. Thumbdrive is 4gb size. So it just let me choose from which file i want to update bios. But it's probably a good idea to have only bios file there when updating. Also, i don't know if it matters but i used front panel usb3.0 port for it.
