after i got my Maximus Hero 8 Board i had 2-3 stressful weeks because Windows wouldnt shutdown fully and properly the shutdown page with the shutdown message stays until i get a bsod after about 10mins the board is still alive fans rotate lights are up the graphic card is still alive!

so i searched and did much things to solve this problem changed settings in the bios changed ram banks and position plugged in and out usb devices deinstalled programs and many things to find a solution but 99% of the advices also found in here didnt help near to giving up making some last trys i found the solution so here it is.

Some of the Autostart services from Intel probably installed with the drivers from the Asus Mainboard Site cause the problem so we need to deactivate them.

Press the Windows button now in the search bar type msconfig on the window popping up go to servicesand search for the Intel services now deactivate them by unclick the checkmark that is it now your Board should shutdown fully and properly!

Let's add my 2 cents. When I power on my PC and shut it down a few minutes later, it works like a charm: it powers off. However after playing a game for a while (or just watching netflix), the system is unable to shutdown. It says 'Shutting down' but nothing happens (verbose mode already on). I need to shut it down using the power button.

Replaced several hardware (PSU, GPU, RAM) but the problem persists. As I can now read, I am not the only one. Already running the latstes bios over here (Gene VIII).

I will un-install AiSuite tonigh to check if that works, but the irratation level is really really high now - havent had a proper run for weeks now. Paid a lot of money though 😞

Use also aisuite cleaner after you uninstalled, link is somewhere here on forums. For me uninstalling it fixed the problem.

Well, deinstalled Ai3Suite and deactivated the mentioned Intel services - and surprisingly the system now shuts down after an intensive gaming sessiong (tried it once - but with a previous failure rate of 100%, it is quite clear for me).

Strange story though, and cost me tons of time.

Hello Asus Mobo owners,

I would like to share my experience concerning the same issue, but everyone should know this it's not limited to Maximus mobo,

I owned Asus Z170 Pro Gaming since the beginning of January, everything is running very well except that my computer doesn't shutdown properly for unknown reason and randomly, note that when I start my computer again, it never showed messages or warnings about bad shutdown,

I did alot of research but nothing worked, but I've understood that the issue occurs when I use my computer for long time with heavy usage (gaming session ...), however it shutdown properly after 1 to 3h of simple usage,

What I did until now :

* Disable all extra services
* Disable all unneeded apps running on startup
* check every connector if it is well wired, changed the SATA cable from 5th entry to the first SATA port,
* disable all intel services
* reset all settings in BIOS, also disabled automatic overclock ... revert all settings to stock ones,
* updated BIOS to the latest one (1105 now)

but nothing helped, until I saw this thread, the only two things that still didn't tried are re-install system and uninstall AISuite 3 and Asus software

I've tried first uninstalling AISuite 3 and all it's component, also all Asus apps, and now, shutdown works perfectly,

Asus should correct this problem, AISuite 3 is very useful to controle everything, but such a primitive functionality affected, it's not acceptable !

my rig :

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
intel i7 6700K
Enermax Liqmax II 120S
Sapphire Nitro R9 390 Tri-X
HyperX Fury 8Go DDR4 2666Mhz C15
Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition Windowed
EVGA SuperNova 750 G2
Seagate Barracuda 1To

I agree this needs to be fixed by ASUS,

it has been working on and off for me since i've had my motherboard ( maximus 8 hero )
depending of the BIOS version that i am running

1302 was working
1402 is not
1202 was not
1102 was working but was cocking my CPU with way too much voltage

I think that the BIOS isn't the problem. The problem is AI SUITE 3 (Fan Expert 3)
Without AIsuite installed all shutsdowns ok!
With AIsuite if i change the fan profile previous to shutdown, all ok

I think that ASUS must hear us and solve the chronic problems with AI suite

Hi All,

I can comfirm that after clearing the BIOS setting/ Cleart CMOS by using the button on the motherboard has solve my problem.
I had tried all of the various solutions ... non were working for me.

I had also reset bios to default in the UEFI bios many time... only by using the Clear CMOS button on the motherboard has actually worked.

Hope this can help others

Here it is my system:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Asus Hero VIII
I7 6700K
16GB Ripjaw 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM
Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Rx (Called also audigy 5 who is searching for 2 zs it's good)
2x 1TB WesternDigital RED

Random shutdown issue it seems I've solved this way:

Bios >>> 1402
Clear CMOS

ERP Ready : Enabled
S4+S5 (enabled I want completly shutdown my system)
XHCI Hand-OFF : Enabled (This solves a lots of trouble with connecting or not connecting usb devices)
INTEL Thunderbolt/USB3.1 : Disabled

Pay also attention if you have installed VMWARE Workstation there's an incompatibility issue with USB (this prevent correct host shutdown)
You need to disable completly this service: VMWARE Usb Arbitration Service

We have these issues only for BAD BIOS if you analyze Event Viewer there are also ACPI Alert

Best Regards
Tony

P.S.
Tried a lots of shutdown also in row or after some hours of gaming it seems resolved.
I've AISuite 3 and Asus software installed

after spending over a month without AISuit 3 and no problem since, I have installed the last update posted 2016/03/23, no problem so far until now, I spend hours playing games, 12h usage and the system shutdown properly, Thanks Asus 🙂

I have been having this same issue. It is very random as to when it happens. I am on a Maximus VIII Formula with the latest bios. I have tried all of the bios versions with no change. I have reformatted the system and ran it with and without AI Suite 3, but I am still having issues. I have seen somewhere in this forum about XHCI hand off, is this something that can be enabled without issue in Windows 10?

I've rarely encountered this problem since i uninstalled AI suite however....

It will often fail to shut down when I have (or have had) an external hard drive plugged into either of the USB ports next to the Ethernet socket.
I don't know if that helps to narrow it down but thought I'd add it to the thread just in case.

Also ASUS please dedicate some more resources to solving this issue it's been around for far too long.
