[solution] windows doesnt shutdown on maximus boards

Stukow
Level 7
after i got my Maximus Hero 8 Board i had 2-3 stressful weeks because Windows wouldnt shutdown fully and properly the shutdown page with the shutdown message stays until i get a bsod after about 10mins the board is still alive fans rotate lights are up the graphic card is still alive!

so i searched and did much things to solve this problem changed settings in the bios changed ram banks and position plugged in and out usb devices deinstalled programs and many things to find a solution but 99% of the advices also found in here didnt help near to giving up making some last trys i found the solution so here it is.

Some of the Autostart services from Intel probably installed with the drivers from the Asus Mainboard Site cause the problem so we need to deactivate them.

Press the Windows button now in the search bar type msconfig on the window popping up go to servicesand search for the Intel services now deactivate them by unclick the checkmark that is it now your Board should shutdown fully and properly!

Hi

Update to Bios 1302 and CMOS clearing had no effect on the issue...

@Stukow: It's definitely not the same problem as you have. It's never stuck in the windows shutdown screen, it always shuts down fast and correctly (Herunterfahren) until the screen goes off after 5 Seconds. But the mainboard is still powered on and the power LED is on.

The problem really comes only after gaming (different games) more than 45min. Every other time it powers off normally. This is strange...

@Janne-71 and ttony: A few questions to narrow this down, since you exactly have the same behaviour like me: What hardware / Software do you use in the background?

I have a GTX980TI with latest nvidia drivers, a Sound Blaster Z with latest software, a Steelseries Sensei with Steelseries Engine 2.9, HWInfo is running and the latest Beta of AI Suite.

Another thing could be that I changed the mainboard from Z68 to Hero without reinstalling Windows 10...

surely that is not recommend to come from a different chipset to a new one ....i experienced several issues related to not using a fresh Windows install in the past. So you should do a fresh Installation first!

the issue it could be the same problem or not who knows... but there are a similarity with all the Users and thats the fact that the Boards are alive anyways and thats it we need to find out.

and there is also a similarity on us both..you mentioned that if you play some longer that then the issue appears thats what i noticed too but only if i activate this 3 Intel Services again for me!! Last day i activate this Services back to be sure again and again and after a session of about 1 Hour Gaming i tested to shutdown and it didnt !

@ttony

if its so that could also stay for an Software and Services maybe Ram Issue too

did you try out to shutdown the system some later with this apps closed maybe after an longer game session where it seems to happen more often?

@ all

and like the User Barbara917 mentioned that after she/he deinstalled the Asus AiSuite the Issue got away.
now installed it since 4-5 days and it doesnt seem to cause any problem

I uninstalled AiSuite and use AiSuite3Cleaner. After the second restart everything is okay.

do you have the shutdown issue too?

how long did you try it out now ? (how many restarts, how many days, how long the system was on before shutdown,)

I had a problem with the shutdown of the month. Widows 7 motherboard Asus Hero VIII.

I noticed a couple of problems with my new system which was built in mid Dec 2015.

First was the shut down problem, where Windows 10 would get stuck on the "shutting down" message. This would usually happen if my system had been on for more than 4+ hours. I used to experience this problem almost daily.

Second was the system would completely freeze (i.e. screen frozen, mouse wouldn't move). Again this would usually happen if my system had been on for more than 4+ hours and particularly when gaming.

After a couple of weeks of various tweaking and no success resolving the issue, I tried running everything at default specs (so no overclocking of any component) but still experienced the above problems.

However since I uninstalled AISuite about a week ago, everything has been working great and not had a single re-occurrence of any issue.

@Stukow: Yes I only have these 3 Intel services and deactivating them did really make no difference with my problem, I tested multiple times and double checked if they were inactive, so I switched them back on:

However, I found something new, interesting. Today I just surfed the web for 2h with my PC and it shut down flawless. I also made an acronis backup and set it to shutdown after the task automatically, which it did also correctly after 1h30. So the issue has to with gaming or "stressing" the pc. Maybe the ACPI driver acts different after heavy load.

I will now also uninstall AI Suite 3 and use the Asus Cleaner. What I also found while googling is that many people with these sort of issues could solve it by changing or deactivating the Intel Management Engine Driver, as the Version 11 seems to be bugged with Windows 10.

Btw. what Intel ME Driver are you guys using? Mine is 11.00.1166. I will also try different versions like 1158 or even deactivate the whole thing:

This is the version i have

I had a problem with the computer shutting down but then turning itself back on whenever it felt like it. I looked through the forums from people saying turn on ErP (S5) to people saying alter power settings in Windows (10 by the way). Nothing seemed to work but then I found that Windows 10 doesn't shut down properly but goes into a hybrid sleep mode so I turned this off and disabled quick boot, viola, it shut down and stayed off. I don't know what version of windows you are on but if on 10 try disabling the said quick boot and see if it shuts down for you.
"The only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad"

I tried disabling hybrid sleep and quick boot the other day. I thought it worked. Two shut downs later and it stopped shutting down properly again. I'm also sure I tried the S5 option in the motherboard to no avail. I might try it again one of these days. I'm on Windows 10 by the way.

The thing about this problem is it is relatively hard to trigger this issue. I either have to heavily stress my PC or keep it on the whole day to make sure I can prevent a shut down, but once it starts, I can trigger it continuously until I rest my computer for awhile. As I mentioned before, disabling USB 3.1 and Type-C from the BIOS allows proper shut down, but I would very much want to keep this functionality.
