[solution] windows doesnt shutdown on maximus boards

Stukow

after i got my Maximus Hero 8 Board i had 2-3 stressful weeks because Windows wouldnt shutdown fully and properly the shutdown page with the shutdown message stays until i get a bsod after about 10mins the board is still alive fans rotate lights are up the graphic card is still alive!

so i searched and did much things to solve this problem changed settings in the bios changed ram banks and position plugged in and out usb devices deinstalled programs and many things to find a solution but 99% of the advices also found in here didnt help near to giving up making some last trys i found the solution so here it is.

Some of the Autostart services from Intel probably installed with the drivers from the Asus Mainboard Site cause the problem so we need to deactivate them.

Press the Windows button now in the search bar type msconfig on the window popping up go to servicesand search for the Intel services now deactivate them by unclick the checkmark that is it now your Board should shutdown fully and properly!

It can be from BIOS, is kinda ilogical windows shutsdown,no video no nothing and what else will be running to prevent it ?

Does everybody here haves windows 7/linus to confirm it happends also on that OS ?

I noticed something else, kinda now almost every time when the pc runs long ~ 10 hous will not shutdown

If it runs a few hours 1-2-3 will shut down

My Maximus VIII is running a new installation of Windows 10. My Maximus VI (which I am giving to me son as soon as he paints my house) is running Windows 7. But I feel that comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. I do have a shutdown problem of sorts on the Windows 7 installation. Shutdown actually does a restart and I have to shutdown twice. It does shutdown though. It is just an annoyance that I have to do it twice.

Do you have that annoying intrerupt randomly like a 200ms freeze?

I don't understand the question so I am going to guess not.

Unfortunately I also suffer from this bug since I installed my new Maximus VIII Hero 3 weeks ago. I'm on Windows 10 and UEFI 1202 and I have tried so many things now. At the beginning Hybrid Start and Hybrid Standby were causing problems, so that it never shut down completely. After this was fixed I now only have the problem after gaming / running the pc more than let's say 1 hour. Screen goes black, but the mainboard stays powered on (fans, waterpump also) and the clicking relais sound to switch off does not appear...I have to hard power off.

I did not have the problem with my former mainboard Z68 Gene-Z, where I also used Windows 10. I also tested with or without AI suite but the problem still exists. It's really strange but I have the feeling the error just appears when the PC is warm after longer gaming. I can test now with the intel services deactivated (I just have 3 of them), but somehow I think this is a hardware or BIOS related bug with this board. Please ASUS engineers have a look at that Issue. Maybe when I find time i will try to do a fresh install of windows 10 and test with only the minimum software installed.

Edit: I also checked the Windows Event Viewer but I can see no errors there when checking the log of the last shutdown...

This is exactly the issue i have, i feel it happens when my comp has been running a long time also and gaming. Only my event viewer has kernel power 41 events, due to shutting it down manually i think.

ok please report your standing

and to the other Users i cant hold it back to repeat me over and over... if i activate this services back my shutdown problems will start again so this issue is reproduceable for me so there could be some other obvious Options you ignored please check for it also like the Options in the Windows Energy Management or in the Bios Settings.

update 1:

i actually solved the problem that the Pc couldnt restart to Windows but to the Bios by Clear Cmos i guess that happened because i did to much changes on the Bios these days and noticed that the Bios get some strange behaving when changing some settings....

The Asus Staff/Employees should also check how stable the actually Bios Versions are really!

also all Users try to Clear the Cmos for your Shutdown Issues combined with deactivating the Intel Services

I did the test with deactivating the Intel Services, but I still have the same problems. Shut down works all the time if I just use the pc for a short time (half an hour). Now I played Heroes of the Storm for 1h with deactivated Intel Services and the system did not power off.

I will check with the new Bios 1302 and clear CMOS. If this error also persists after a fresh Windows 10 Installation I will RMA the mainboard. It would really be interesting to see if Gigabyte, MSI etc. users also have this ****

very strange then there could be additional software and or services which could still cause the problem but on the other side why on my case if i activate them back i get the problem too. How are this 3 Services called you deactivated? And are you sure you really deactivated them please check for it!

when it doesnt shutdown is the monitor still on doesnt go standby blackscreen and on the screen it says "shutdown" or in german "herunterfahren"?
if yes did you wait whats happening then? for me after a while about 10 mins i get a blue screen of death with a "driver power state failure" what sounds like software related..

I dont think the new Bios will change something i also changed the Versions even to older ones then brought nothing but try aswell but before try to clear cmos first.... please check on the board if the pins for the chassis connectors (power button powerled and so on ) sit fully on the qconnector and its place. Also watch for the Codes on Board when it shutdowns properly and then when it doesnt shutdown if there are any differences in the numbers of the Code

Hi

Update to Bios 1302 and CMOS clearing had no effect on the issue...

@Stukow: It's definitely not the same problem as you have. It's never stuck in the windows shutdown screen, it always shuts down fast and correctly (Herunterfahren) until the screen goes off after 5 Seconds. But the mainboard is still powered on and the power LED is on.

The problem really comes only after gaming (different games) more than 45min. Every other time it powers off normally. This is strange...

@Janne-71 and ttony: A few questions to narrow this down, since you exactly have the same behaviour like me: What hardware / Software do you use in the background?

I have a GTX980TI with latest nvidia drivers, a Sound Blaster Z with latest software, a Steelseries Sensei with Steelseries Engine 2.9, HWInfo is running and the latest Beta of AI Suite.

Another thing could be that I changed the mainboard from Z68 to Hero without reinstalling Windows 10...
