Recommendations on Mobo and CPU

I would be interested in hearing what CPUs people have purchased to go with their Maximus VIII motherboard. My current Maximus IV Extreme and i7-2600K CPU appear to have given up the ghost (https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?95006-Max-IV-Extreme-wont-POST-very-confused&p=665550#post...) and I want to replace them with something that would leverage as many of my existing components as possible.

I currently have a Maximus IV Extreme and a i7-2600K with the following:

I was considering the i7-6700K (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/tdmxFT/intel-cpu-bx80662i76700k) although the i7-7700 looks solid as well (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9mRFf7/intel-core-i7-7700-36ghz-quad-core-processor-bx80677i77700).

I don't think either will work with the Antec Kuhler I have but I'm assuming everything else would work fine.

I'd be interested in any advice/experience others have had with their builds.

Hi Haggisdog

I'd go with the i7-7700k as it's the same price as the 6700k, you'll need to update the bios with the bios flashback feature for the Maximus VIII motherboard to recognize the cpu. You'll need a usb flash drive to update the bios, if you go with a Maximus IX board the 7700k will work out of the box.

You'll want a DDR4 ram kit and G.Skill Trident Z is popular.

I'm with you on the Antec Kuhler, it may not be compatible.

Did you see which way the flying monkey's went? Let's team up and go get your icon back. 😄

Thanks for the suggestion. What would you recommend for a good CPU cooler? I really like the Antec liquid coolers, whisper quiet and kept my old CPU well within thresholds under almost any load. It looks like they're coolers only support a LGA1150 socket though not the 1151 of the new i7s.

PS thanks for the help with those monkeys.. good icons are hard to find!

Any cooler for socket 1150 will work with socket 1151, in fact they will work any socket 115x.

You might want to contact Antec and ask them if the kuhler 620 is compatible with z170/z270 before buying one just to make sure, if it is you'll need an 115x mounting bracket or if you want a new one go for it. 🙂

One thing though, Sandy bridge was the last cpu's to use solder. Intel used thermal paste on the 6700k and 7700k and they run hotter so a good cooler is a must, especially if you're an overclocker.

I'm about to move forward with the Mobo and CPU combo but it appears that the Patriot RAM I have is DDR3 and this board only supports DDR4 is that correct?
