"CPU Fan Speed Error Detected"

First off let me say hello everyone. This past month I completed my first PC build. That being said, I have a LOT to learn when it comes to PC's. There are a few issues I've been trying to iron out since it's completion but can't seem to figure them out on my own. SO, that bring us to this error message I keep getting upon start up...

Every time I start my PC since it's completion, the BIOS reads, "CPU Fan Speed Error Detected". My setup is as follows: ASUS Maximus VIII Formula, Intel i76700k, an NZXT Kraken X61 CPU Cooler and other stuff that isn't important. I did some surfin' online and found that if you have the the CPU cooler hooked up incorrectly, this could cause that error message to appear. Well, I double check in the manual and everything is where it's suppose to be (four pin CPU cable to four pin CPU_Fan header and three pin pump cable to four pin pump header).

Secondly I read that if you have an aftermarket cooler of any kind, the motherboard it looking to read a stock Intel cooler so the fan speed needs to be set in order to read properly? Something like that. That's where I'm stumped, if that's the case and I do need to set the fan speed, where do I go to do this?

Again, bare with me as I'm a console peasant in the big men's league trying to ball with the best of 'em. I'm struggling to even figure out the BIOS and this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a ton.

yeah give it a try and let us know if it works with the Led's and s4-s5 power state

I have X31 Kraken AIO cooler and only connection on mainboard is W_Pump.
I use 2 fans (push - pull) to ventilate cooler and both are connected on the splitter.
For control I use CAM software from NZXT :p.

Hi there,
Sorry for reviving an old thread. I am in the exact same situation as the op (from issue to first build to balling with the big guns!).

I have my x61 connected to the water pump header and the usb header on the mob -maximus hero viii. The two fans and one chasis fan connected to the splitter.
I changed in the bios to ignore CPU fan speed and i boot through to windows.

I have installed CAM abs it is registering everything as far as i can tell.

Is this the best way to connect have the cooler installed and to manage the fans?

Im a total noob to this and have done a lot of research. I thought i had it right but wanted to double check with people that no more

The other option I've read is water pump to pump header then the two fans to the cpu fan and cpu fan optional headers.

Would love it is someone can confirm I have installed correctly.
Thanks

Hello nnank76

You can leave it how you have it as long as the three fans in total doesn't exceed 1 amp. (12 watts)

Or your other option which is what I'd probably do.

Water pump to water pump header.
USB 2.0 for the cam software.
The 2 cooler fans at the cpu and cpu_opt headers or use a splitter and connect them to the cpu fan header.
Case fan to a chassis fan header.

Thanks Nate. I'll have to buy a y splitter then. I thought that might be the case but want sure.

If i do plug the fans direct into cpu fan header and cpu opt header do i then need to change in bios the cpu fan speed option back to monitor or keep it as ignore?

Just following on from the above. I set the x61 up as above. Set the 'cpu fan speed' back to monitor. The pump started making a rattling sound but after maxing the pump in fan expert the whole system is now back to being quiet.

Thanks for the help 🙂

I did it with the simple method written on the site
