Overclocking Failed Error But Not Overclocking

I left my computer idle at the desktop this evening to go out to dinner and a show. Gone about 4 hours.
I had family at home so I know there was no power outage while I was gone. I use 55" LCD TV as my monitor.
When I got home the screen was on but was receiving no input from the HDMI.
I had to hold in the power button to power off and then restart my computer.
Upon restart the BIOS reports that overclocking had failed but I am not overclocking - not even the memory.

This or something similar has happened a handful of times in the last few months.
The very first time it happened I was overclocking the memory but have not since I got this error the very first time.
Now I am thinking there was never anything wrong with the memory overclock and this is a bogus error being caused by something else.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting this issue would be welcome.

Maximus VIII Gene with a Core I7 6700K not overclocked. BIOS version 1202.
Built this computer back in November and it ran several months before I got this error for the first time.

Hi Barbara917

When you get the overclocking failed message when not overclocking it's likely due to your ram. If your ram kit is over 2133MHz technically that is considered overclocked.

You may need to raise the vccio and cpu system agent voltages a little.

What ram kit do you have ?

I had read that this was overclocked RAM which is why I turned off XMP in the BIOS the first time this event occurred.
This memory is currently being clocked at 2133Mhz when I got this error this evening.
Is there an overclocking guide for RAM you can refer me to?

hi Barbara917,
I would try to upgrade the BIOS first, I had exactly the same issue on stock BIOS on Ranger once upgraded BIOS the only thing required
to overclock the RAM for me was to put XMP profile in BIOS and it overclocked automatically to 3000GHZ

This is often RAM related...

However, you can get this message from a forced shutdown / power off event apparently.

A forced shutdown by holding the power button triggers the watchdog, which will apply safe settings and display the F1 overclocking failed message when the system is powered up. This is actually a feature implemented for overclockers, so that they can recover the system from a failed POST attempt and then change any offending settings in the UEFI.

Ah! Thank you. I have done a forced shutdown each time this has occurred so I will try turning XMP back on.
