Maximus VIII Hero - optical drive

Hi there so I recently built myself a rog system and ended up deciding to go against a new optical drive instead to use a early sata drive I had from a previous build back in 2006?. The problem is it wont boot or fire up at all. No power light on or cannot find it anywhere as registering on the pc. Just wondering if this will still work or if I'm wasting my time? I really don't wanna fork out an extra $50 for a drive ill probably only use a few times ever.

LG GSA-H62N Super Multi DVD Rewriter is the model. Do I need specific drivers or maybe a bios setting? Ive played around with this for awhile now and nothing seems to work.

Running this:
Windows 10
ROG Maximus VIII Hero
i6700k
G.Skill 16gb ram
GTX980Ti

ANY help would be greatly apreaciated as getting this work ASAP is a priority for me as ive got BO3 on disc and CANNOT PLAY IT ugghh 🙂

Hello tech noob

Welcome to the ROG forum.

It's a sata optical drive so it should work. Double check the sata power and data cables is securely connected, if they are maybe a firmware update will get it going.

It is known to be working correct?

if it's dead here's one from Asus for 20 bux.

heya thanks for reply.

it decided to was going to boot randomly after a reboot from bios screen but it wont read any discs and just makes a working kinda clunk noise then stops and re does the same noise over and over, also causes my "PC Info" screen or device manager to go unresponsive while trying to read a disc and also boot time seem significantly longer. It was working fine to my knowledge in my old computer but I honestly hadn't actualy used the disc drive for a good cuple of years. I'm guessing its pasted its use by date :(? I found a local external drive for $16 so if no one has any suggestions I might just order that tomorrow.

It sounds like it could be defective and for 16 bucks it would be worth it to save you a headache figuring out what's wrong with it. 🙂

It's getting power, double check the data sata cable is firmly attached or maybe try another data sata cable.

yea I checked and double checked the leads and they are brand new cables so should be fine. I'm guessing its broke, I went ahead and binned it and ordered the external drive. thanks for tryna help. bit bummed it wouldn't work, was kinda looking forward to having alil history in my new machine but o well 🙂 case closed

lol yea, it wasn't till after I brought it that I found out the digital version was for steam only on pc. Kinda assumed most new games had a digital download as alternative but guessed wrong lol ;(

I believe in steam you can click on add a game and enter a key code. if the game is available on steam just adding the key allows you to then download it through steam
