Maximus VIII Formula

Hello my good fellow ROG'ers

I just upgraded to the maximus viii formula and I love it, the 6700k and 16GB kingston hyperx predator ram (CL12 2400MHz). Everything is installed and running without a hitch. I did have a heck of a time activating windows 7 and then had a heck of a time upgrading to windows 10 but after about 7 hours it's finally done (sheeesh). The only thing I've done so far is overclock the ram and seems to be quite a nice kit as I'm able to overclock it to 3100MHz with 1.35v and timings 15-15-15-30-2T. I'm not an expert in overclocking ram but this looks pretty respectable to me what do you guys think?

I haven't overclocked the cpu yet and that will be next, I'm worried Intel may have sent me a not so good overclocker. I set the windows power plan to high performance and at 4200MHz the cpu is drawing 1.44v, on the bright side temps are great.

For those of you who have experience with the 6700k, I know on auto voltage it will get overvolted some but I was just wondering before I begin overclocking it, is it normal for the voltage to be that high on auto or did I possibly get a below average cpu. I haven't touched the BCLK but it looks to be running a little over 100.0

Thank you to all who answers.

Talking about your cpu lottery, is there a run in time for those as i know with all my home theater gear like amps and speakers there is a run in period and i was thinking that a cpu might work that way also. Even motors have a run in period.

I kind of wish they did but I don't think they do, nothing you can really do except give it what it needs. Running your cpu at too high of temps or voltage can degrade it faster which means it will start needing more voltage for the same speed.

I'm comfortable with where mine is. 🙂

Yea sounds great to me too.As long as you get some awesome gaming out of it and reliability then i think you are a winner.

Awesome Nate! Thanks for sending me the link. That's one sexy-looking rig! Love that badass liquid cooling setup! Im glad the Formula is treating you right. If I had a fancy external liquid cooler, Id have definitely gone with the Formula too! However, Im liking the Hero Alpha. It is taking some getting used to all the changes since my Hero vi. I ran into a few roadblocks along the way, but Im starting to get it running well.

I heard that there can be a plethora of issues when upgrading from Win7 to Win 10. I was tempted to stick with 7, but I decided on getting the Samsung 950 Pro and heard its just easier to go with Win 10 if you want to use it as a boot drive. Several people on here recommended 10, and Im actually glad I gave it a try! (Im also glad I did a fresh install of it lol) Its a pretty nice OS.

The main reason for us gamers to udpate to windows 10 is for the directx 12 feature, I installed the classic shell to give it the windows 7 feel.

There are a few directx 12 games out but one coming soon I have my eye on is Far Cry Primal.

That 950 pro will make it feel more snappy, especially boot times and game load times, nice ! It's the fastest M.2 pcie ssd at the moment, I dig your rig too. 🙂

I would like to post a video of the color changing effect but I don't know how to upload a video, it wants me to type in a URL which there isn't one. I can post pics fine, could one of you wise guys tell me how to do it? 😉

Thank you 🙂

P.S. I have the video saved in my pictures.

Tonight I thought I would try a little BCLK overclocking, I set the BCLK to 125.0 and lowered the cpu multiplier to 38 and set the ram frequency as close to their overclocks as I could.

With the BCLK at 125.0 I ended up with the cpu at 4750MHz and the ram a little over 3100MHz, I was able to get the ram to 1T too.

I played a round of far cry 3 coop for a half hour and cpu temps look better with core 2 showing 71c. I don't know what's up with real temp but it's not reading like cpu-z so that makes me wonder about the temps too. It was stable so I'm going to try for 4.8GHz with the same voltage.

Here is also the lighting control it's easy to use.

This is encouraging maybe I just need to learn how to tweak this new awesome motherboard, I did have the vccio and cpu system agent voltages on auto.

VCCIO was at 1.20v
CPU system agent voltage was at 1.16v

Tried to boot to windows and got an error pc could not start which I suspected would happen so I raised the VCCIO to 1.22v and cpu system agent voltage to 1.20v and voila I'm in windows at 4.8GHz with the same Vcore. I just upped the BCLK a little more until the cpu target speed hit 4800MHz, the ram is now running at 3150MHz 15-15-15-30-1T.

This is giving me alot of incentive to continue tweaking for sure. The max BCLK on my maximus v extreme was like 105.4. BCLK is now 126.3 I wonder how far she'll go? Stay tuned for results. 🙂

Now to give far cry 3 a test again.

Looking good man! Instead of real temp try hwmonitor 😉

Thank you The F34R Channel

I tried with the little more demanding far cry 4 and as soon as it started it froze, so I upped the vcore .05v to 1.465v and played for a half hour with no errors. Vcore is now fluctuating from 1.472v to 1.488v hmmm.....

Let's see what the next test brings, I'm going to try cpu at 4850MHz.

I don't know how far the BCLK can go with skylake but I will raise the BCLK until the cpu target speed hits 4850MHz and see where the ram ends up.
