I am running on the Maximus VIII hero alpha. In regards to the specter/meltdown security issue,
if I update my management engine driver and run the update tool, am I safe with 3504 BIOS, or am I not fully
safe until ASUS releases the 3703 BIOS?

**** this bull**** scaremongering, we're under attack everyday you use your pc and browser or mobile phone, here's me trudging along with bios 3401 on my Maximus VIII hero with 0 problems because any bios after this ****s my overclocking up! and I am NOT installing a bios that reduces the performance of my I76700K or freezes my! no thanks! I'll just keep happily enjoying it's current flawless problems in the future like I have been for the past 12 months or so, Good luck whoever is installing this **** up!

For me, everything actually works so far, havent' really tried OC with the new bios but 4.6/3.0 is stable and Fallout 4 runs flawless. Yes, some things that requires lots of disk access are sluggish compared with before, but cpu/gpu-intensive tasks are virtually unaffected. File copying is also as fast as before, it's the random writing/reading to disk which is sluggish. Not that noticeable on a fast desktop, but on my laptop it hurts.

"We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior."

For the full list of platforms, see the Intel.com Security Center site:
https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=INTEL-SA-00088&languageid=en-fr

For a list of products associated with this updated guidance go here:
https://newsroom.intel.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/11/2018/01/microcode-update-guidance.pdf

In that last link intel says "STOP deployment of these MCU version" and recommends the previous microcode version for a lot of CPUs.

Intel reports stability problems for a lot of CPU generations with the last microcode update in this bios 3703.
What a mess...

-EDIT-
Wikipedia: H, U and Y are BGA packaging (laptop cpus) and S is LGA (desktop cpus).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_(microarchitecture)#Features
"SKL-S and SKL-X contains an overclockable "K" and "X" variant with unlocked multipliers.[41] The H, U and Y variants are manufactured in ball grid array (BGA) packaging, while the S variant is manufactured in land grid array (LGA) packaging using a new socket, LGA 1151 (LGA 2066 for Skylake X)."

I could not figure out wtf has been causing random reboots and start ups on this bios, and now i know why!!
unbelievable

I also did not like the performance of 3703 it just didn't feel the same

I rolled back to version 2202 using the AFUDOS.exe method (basically flashed the Bios in Dos)

I made a tutorial and im actually using the Maximus VIII Hero in it
if you just want to rollback to 3401 you can do that in the bios using EZ Flash but to go back to v2202 you cant, so this method is good and easy

Here is a link to the tutorial:

Just wanted to chime in ... I installed BIOS 3703 last week, rock solid except for the fact that it seemed just a blink slower. I checked Crystal Disk Mark 6.0.0 x64 and it was showing just a small amount slower. I reverted back to BIOS 3504, rock solid and performance is back where it was before I put BIOS 3703 on.

Pretty sure most of the maximus boards have bios flash back, it's in the manual. But sounds like a good way for the boards that don't have it.

They do I just think its easier to flash in Dos, but yes Flashback is a option for the Hero VIII

Recommendations - Updated 1/27/2018:
"We continue to recommend that OEMs, Cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors, and end users stop deployment of current versions of microcode, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior."

"An automatic update available via the Microsoft® Update Catalog which disables ‘Spectre’ variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715) mitigations without a BIOS update. This update supports Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8.1, and all versions of Windows 10 - client and server"

"Both of these options eliminate the risk of reboot or other unpredictable system behavior associated with the original microcode update and retain mitigations for ‘Spectre’ variant 1 and ‘Meltdown’ variant 3 until new microcode can be loaded on the system."

"We continue to believe it is important for OEMs and our customers to follow this guidance for all of the affected platforms. As before, please be assured we are working quickly to address these issues."
