RVE/U3.1 w/3 x EVGA Kingpin - CPU and Mem Guidance Please

Hey guys, I'm back for a little help.

Purpose of build is to extreme oc 3gpu's for Stereo 3d Surround Gaming, so stability for gpu's is priority 1

Picking the 5930K over 5820K due to 40 vs 28 pci 3.0 lanes

I will want to OC my cpu, but with whatever strain I put on with the gpu's/board, is the 5930k vs 5960x any better choice (except for $), priority 2?

Then in 3rd place of priority of stability, is the memory. I don't know jack on memory, any recommended speeds? 2 X 8gb should be sufficient, right?

M.2 - I'll study up later
Already have a overkill Corsair ax1500i

Any other words of wisdom Graciously accepted.
Sincerely,
I Love ROG 🙂

The 5930 is clocked higher which may give a fps or 2, the 5960 has 2 more cores which help with physics and apps that can use that many cores, if they are clocked the same frequency then the 5960 will trump the 5930
for ram you want a 4 stick kit as the x99 platform supports 4 channel memory kits, do some research and get a kit single kit designed for the x99 platform in the size you want as mixing or even matching multiple kits can cause issues
a 4x4 16gb kit is perfect for gaming GSKill is my preferred brand of DDR4 but others will have theres

Hey,

I think (depending on your wallet) the 5930k will do the job and more... I have it and most of the time, game park 1 or 2 cores. Not many games use 6/8 cores. If you want to buy the 5960x i'd wait for the new broadwell-e which would be a much better choice since it's not so far. As for the ram, i had 16gb (4x4 ddr4-3000 cas15 from g.skills) and some games were hitting the 8-10gb mark on my ram. I was getting close the top it off so i decided to go with the same kit but in 32gbs. I wish i would've gone the 32gb first, it would have saved me a couple hundred bucks. I personnally prefer buying kits that are stated 1.35v/3000mhz so i can drop them a little bit and tighten the timings.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I'm going to spend some time looking at a lot of the "signatures" of you guys to educate some more too.

@Avenger411, ya, waiting... I have patience for my wife and family, staff, others around me, but when it comes to building pc's... Thanks for the heads up 🙂

I'll be back to ask some tweaking questions once built.

Take care,
djb

Its gonna be a nice build you have going on. 5930k here and its a great cpu for me. I plan to put it into a custom loop cooling loop in a few months as I am not sure I wanna or need to get the broadwell chip for what I do on a day to day basis as I alread have this cpu. But If you can wait and see the broadwells before you decide yo might be able to get a 5930 or 5960 cheaper lol. Im in same boat as Avenger as I have 16 gb ram and should have done 4x8 but live n learn they say. Have fun with the build and post any questions you may encounter

I'd go 5960X myself...

3Kingpins especially OCd can output a hell of a lot to the CPU...you want all the performance there you can get. In fact running 3 or 4 GPUs the CPU may be a bottleneck very often benchmarking 4 gpus people leave them at stock and OC the CPU all they can to cope with throughput from cards.

Definitely want quad channel memory. 16GB will be great...32GB always nice if you want a ram drive or use photoshop, render video...frequency not too important outside of benchmarks...not important for gaming for example...2400 easier to run....3000 at 32GB might need tweaking...

Hey arne,

Since 2001, i don't know wtf happened but i can easily get to 3000mhz/cas15/32gbs which was hard for me on 1701 and lower. I guess people are doing their jobs.

Doesn't the kingpin reguire 3 pcie power cables? The corsair ax1500i only has 8 pcie power cables, you would need 9 pcie power cables.

EVGA supernova 1600w has 9 8-pin (6+2 pin) and 5 6-pin pcie power cables.

The new Samsung B-die seem to be really great modules, I got a 32GB Gskill TZ 3200 CL14-14-14-35 kit that was easy to set up on my RVE, I don't use XMP but I did try XMP and it booted right up without any issue's and run them daily at CL13 -13-13-35-1T at 1.4 vdimm, they probably run at lower voltage that has just been my standard volts to assure stability on every kit I have tried
I got 2 16GB kits of 3600mhz CL 16-16-16- and put them on my M8E and had no issue at 3600mhz and factory timings with 1T, upped them to 3733 17-17-17-36-1T without a glitch, again I just use 1.4 vdimm, I am not one to search for the very minimum volts
I still haven't increased bandwidth past the good old Hynix kit on the RVE but these new Samsung modules seem like a no fuss no muss, hassle free addition to either platform, at least that has been my experience so far, I haven't played with any timings other than the first ones but others report fantastic results with these B-die modules on both platforms, I purchased the Trident Z over the Ripjaw V just for the heatsinks the price difference is very minimal but there are B-die modules in both if you pick the correct kits

Hey Menthol,

How do you know which "memory chip" you have in your kit ? Do you absolutely have to take apart the heatsink or there's a list somewhere ?
