Rampage V Extreme delayed BIOS post

Hi, I recently built a gaiming pc using the Rampage V Extreme. Everything went well until I noticed that it takes a good 20-40 seconds for the BIOS to post. I have since tried everything from updating drivers and the bios itself, to unplugging sata cables from my ssd and plugging them elsewhere. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My specs are:
OS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
CPU: i7 5930k
Motherboard: Rampage V Extreme
GPU: Asus Strix 980
RAM: Corsair Veangeance LPX 16gb
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro
PSU: Corsair HX1000i
I also have the NZXT Kraken x61 as my cpu cooler if that matters at all.

Hi, like I said it jumps around but I have noticed a pause on "61" "67" "6d" and latley "4F" "79" and "A0". Also should I switch off all of the pcie lanes that im not using?

Theoricaly you should've have to "disable" pcie lanes that you're not using. It should work like it's meant to. There is most definitely an underlying cause. Do you have usb hubs connected through your monitor ? Do you have multiple monitors connected ? if so, bring it down to 1 and if you have hubs connected, disconnect them in case you didn't do it the first time around.

If the board is not hanging on a single Q-Code there is most likely nothing wrong. There is a lot of signal setup done during POST and boot times are lengthily compared to previous platforms. 15 seconds or more is common for something to be displayed on the monitor from the time the power button is pressed.

Hey, I'm only using one monitor at the moment and have no usb hubs. How long of a time period would be considered "hanging"? It sometimes stays on a couple like "79" for a second or two. This is also the second mobo I've tested and both have had the same issue so it is possible that nothing is wrong but it seems like 20 seconds is a long time. Also I have a Corsair HX1000i as my psu but I dont have enough internal usb 2.0 headers to connect the Corsair Link adapter to... could this lead to a slower boot? I'm justing going down a list of things that could be causing it.

Due to the complexity of the X99 platform, it does boost slower than the mainstream Z97 platform. If you systen isn't halting, it's working fine.

I think all is OK, my RVE takes about 14 - 17 s, from cold boot until i'm able to enter bios/UEFI and about 20/25 s until W8 logo shows off.

To speed things up, you can try disabling in UEFI things that you don't use.

For exemple, i dont use SATA6G_ 7/8/9/10, so i disabled the second Intel SATA controller, idem i dont use SATA6G_E3/4 so ASMedia SATA controller is also disabled. Same for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi controllers.

Thank you all for your input, you've all been very helpful. Other than 15-30 second wait for the bios to post my pc seems to run perfectly, and I think it most likley is normal.

What BIOS are you running? I didn't see that info posted anywhere.

I spent a couple weeks trying to get 1401 working on a system/OC that had been rock solid stable on 1103. In addition to the problem you're describing, I was seeing boot loops, failure to POST, and general instability. Some of these issues would go away if I restored to defaults (no-OC), but even doing so the system would boot loop and take too long to load the OS.

At least in my configuration, I can fairly confidently say that 1401 is a bad BIOS. Returning to 1103 fixed everything.

Hi, I am infact running 1401. I will have to try going back to 1103 and see if that fixes anything.
