RAM issues, reboot issues, getting REALLY tired...

First, to avoid flames, I've been using ROG boards since they came out (yeah, I'm OLD), and with the small exception of a few duds, have always been really pleased. ASUS all the way.

I've been building computers since '92, and OC'ing for years.

My last working ROG system was a Maximus IV Extreme-Z, and quite possibly the best product I've ever had. Could OC that beast to unreal numbers and be rock steady. It's my daughter's system now, running a 3770K at 4.87GHz on water. Upgraded to a 4790K and a Maximus VI Extreme, board CPU socket was damaged (in the box, not by me) and had to be returned to Microcenter.

I got my store credit and dropped a huge amount of additional $ on a RVE, a 6-core unlocked CPU, and 16Gb (8Gb X 2config) of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4-2400 RAM.

First board would not fully boot. Board was bad OOB. Played with it for 4 days before I gave up. BIOS was 400-series, said the BIOS was trying to be recovered at first, and then overclocking failed even though it was not being overclocked, and only reported 8Gb of RAM installed out of 16Gb. After about 30 attempts of changing settings in the BIOS, it finally wouldn't work, tried to install new BIOS using Flashback, Flashback button wouldn't even light up. Clear CMOS button was not illuminated either. Yes, the PSU and everything else was hooked up correctly.

Returned it and the RAM. Microcenter said that the board was indeed bad and they had no boards available to test the DDR4 RAM, so they just exchanged it. Very nice of them. Great place to do business.

Set up the system, everything was ok until I got an overclocking failed! error (was not overclocked) on the first boot. Hit F1 to configure BIOS.

Next boot, got the "bd" or "6b" error. Really, ASUS, make those two codes easier to distinguish. Eliminate one, perhaps.

Next boot, got a "00".

Next, a "55". Getting really ticked off now, been upgrading the system for 2 weeks between the M7E and the first RVE...

Finally, on a whim, pulled the DIMM from slot C1. Booted right up. Shut down by me. Hmmm...

Pulled the DIMM from A1 and installed in C1. Booted fine. Put the DIMM that was removed in both slots to make sure it was OK and the computer booted up fine.

Went into BIOS and toggled Extreme Mode, and set the system config to XMP. Put the RAM DIMMs in A1 and C1. Checked for bent pins first.

On reboot, the board recognized the XMP profile of the RAM immediately... BUT...

Only reports 8Gb of RAM. It "sees" that there is a DIMM in C1, but the SPD info is blank.

Tried other memory configs, but regardless of slots, only sees 8Gb.

Summary: BIOS only sees exactly HALF of the installed RAM. Windows too. However, CPUID says there's 16Gb installed between slot 1 and 2. BIOS is latest - 1001, I believe. System is working great, running 3-way SLI and no glitches. But - half the installed RAM only. That's two different boards, two different sets of DIMMs, both only report half of the RAM is actually installed. BUT CPUID SAYS 16GB INSTALLED. (Not shouting, just making the point).

How do I fix this? Everything is hooked up correctly, and I've even pushed this board to 4.9GHz.

I had the same problem with the 1st memory slot on my board but only when changing kits from Corsair to G.Skill, and seeing that i was using my system for a month before changing kits i never had any problem, after swapping sticks around and wiggling the DIM i got rid of the problem, All the help i can give you would be to wiggle the DIM around in the slot and also test the other sticks in the same slot, Also switch to the 2nd bios to make sure its not bios related as well. There as been a few members that have sent there boards back for the same reason one DIM slot seems to be dud.

List your complete system specifications for me. Try to be as detailed as possible. Also, is that 16GB kit a single kit or mutliple kits combined?

Single kit, 2 X 8Gb DDR4-2400.

Here's the specs, removed all security info and user info not necessary. Currently nothing is OC'd until I root-cause this. I have not sanitized all unnecessary apps and processes because I'm not running for max performance.

A single DIMM, either one of the pair, will work in any slot, so a bad slot is probably not the issue.

Note that SPECCY is reporting 16Gb of RAM...

I don't think that memory is a good choice for this platform even if its a single kit. The Corsair and GSkill quad channel kits fare a lot better and are more versatile for the most part. In the above case, I'd just confirm there are no slot issues by using a DIMM (try both independantly) on its own in that slot.

Regarding the POST codes - we don't choose those, they are part of the platform's internal reporting. Just learn to distinguish between a b and a 6. The 6 has a horizontal line across the top, the b does not. Once you know that, it's simple distinguishing what you are seeing.

What heatsink are you using? Try loosening the screws for it. Sometimes uneven pressure can cause the RAM slots to malfunction.

Corsair H120. Screws snug, not tight. Loosened 1 turn, no change.
