Problem updating bios

On both 2101 and 3008 beta, I was unable to update the bios with the flashback method. Never had an issue in the past. The flash drive would flicker and complete as always, but I was still left with the baseline bios version. I had to use EZ Flash 2 inside the bios itself to update to the last 2 versions. I did clear CMOS before trying to update per routine. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks.

Hi Hopper64. I cant see you doing anything wrong. Unless!!

When you flashed your Bios, Did you use the old method of using renaming tool cause Bios 3008 beta is (once extracted) a .CAP file.
The Bios file is in ZIP format and needs extraction to an empty fat32 formated USB stick.
The flicker you mention is from the USB? When flashing you should observe the ROG connect button.

Sorry I can't think of anything else.

I thought they are all .cap files now. I just renamed it myself to R5E.cap. The file worked with the EZ Flash method in the bios itself, just not by bios flashback. I would think that if the file was named incorrectly neither method would work. The flicker was present as usual from the USB and the bios chip itself was flashing too.

That's odd, I've had it not flicker but never flicker and not update. I would make sure you don't now have both an R5E.CAP and a R5E.CAP.CAP on the USB... naming it R5E.CAP.CAP can be a very easy mistake if your explorer is set to hide extensions (the default) and I suspect the EZFlash method might let you pick that file from a list which could explain how it worked.

The only other thing I did was accidently hit the CMOS button for a second or so before I started having problems with the flash drive in the USB Flashback port. I simply took the flash drive out, reformatted, replaced the correct file, cleared the CMOS again, and then proceeded to update as usual. It went through the cycles of stating the bios was being updated as well, but the baseline bios version was still present after this. Went into the bios and used EZ Flash, found the correct file, and it updated with no problem. ??

Hopper64,

Can't really tell anything from that graphic unless we know if your explorer is set to the default "hide file extensions". If it is, then that is exactly what a R5E.CAP.CAP would look like, which is why it's such an easy mistake to make.

I have that "hide extensions of known file types" unchecked, and it updated correctly in EZ flash 2, so I don't think that's it. Thanks for your input.

EZ Flash 2 doesn't require the file to be named anything specific so it should've worked either way, but if you're not hiding extensions, then beats me, that was the only way I could think of to replicate your results. Good luck.

Thanks. Just checked my settings again. That box is unchecked for hiding extensions of known file types. And I wouldn't think hitting the CMOS button did anything either. Just cut power to the board.

As an update-Flashed 3101 using bios flashback with no problem. Worked well, just like in the past. Don't know why the other bios versions didn't flash properly. Quite odd.
