OC Penal overclocking failed

Magnum_P_I_

Hello,

I want to overclock my I7 5820K with the OC Penal in normal mode (OC Penal installed in the case). In the ASUS CPU-Z tool the currant Core Voltage changes several times per second from 1.082V to 0.753V. Same goes for the Core Speed and Multiplier that changes also several times per second from 3597MHz - x36 to 1198MHz - x12 and back. Pressing the OC button has no affect on this values. Any idea why overclocking with the OC Penal does not work?

Intel i7 5820K
Win 10 - 64 Bit
BIOS Version 1701
ASUS CPU-Z Version 1.72.1

Big thanks for help!!!

Hello Magnum P.I. welcome to the ROG forum. I remember that show from the late 70's early 80's. 🙂

The overclock panel is working, what's happening is your cpu is throttling when not under load to conserve power. If you want it to run at a constant speed without throttling try setting the windows power plan to high performance. If it still throttles, in the bios advanced tab, cpu configuration disable speedstep and the c1e state.

Your cpu should now stay at the overclock you set.

I personally would do the overclocking manually in the bios, this way you have more control over the voltage.

I switched to high performance and now it throttles much less as before. Maybe once per second. I looked in BIOS but can´t find speedstep and the c1e state.

I never overclocked a CPU manually before, this is why I like the idea of the OC Penal. I guess I can overclock it even more as I use a Alphacool 360 Complete watercooling set with a D5 pump. Only problem, I have no experience with overclocking manually.

Did you press the OK button on the OC Panel to apply the changes?
I can´t reach the OK button because the OC Penal installed in the bay - Normal mode.

If you're overclocking your system using the OC Panel to make changes to the multiplier and Vcore, you need to press the OK button to make the changes take effect.

Regarding your CPU not always running at the highest frequency, it's due to Intel Speedstep which helps save power. If you want your CPU to always run at the highest frequency you can either disable Speedstep in the BIOS or use the High Performance power plan in Windows.

To find the Speedstep option in the BIOS, navigate to the Extreme Tweaker tab then scroll down to the Internal CPU Power Management section. It'll be the first option in that section.

Your board is a little different than mine, In your last screenshot click on cpu power management configuration and see if speedstep and the c1e state are listed there.

Big thanks! The Speedstep option is under cpu power management configuration and also under Extreme Tweaker + Internal CPU Power Management. Now it´s off and the numbers stay the same. Big thanks!!!

I was trying to see if the Firmware of the OC Panel can be updated and find this list:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboard-Accessories/OC_Panel/

For the Rampage V it must have Firmware 0501 or later on it. In the Asus support page I can not find the firmware update tool for Win 10 64 -Bit which I use. It´s only available for the Win 7, 8 and 8.1. Will this tool work if I use the Win 8.1 version or can I damage the OC Panel?

I found the OC Panel next to useless for actual overclocking, R5E BIOS settings offer far more powerful control.

The OC Panel is a really snazzy-looking hardware monitor, though, several of my friends have looked upon it admiringly.
