Hello..

I feel qualified to answer this question

NO, you cant

there would be probably a new generation cpu to support the board

I'm sure ASUS ROG likes to think of it that way round too 😄

Yep, while the number of pins in the socket remains the same the exact layout/connections is different as is the chipset and RAM compatibility and...etc etc

No, it's not possible. 😉 Although the LGA2011-3 has the same pin count and measurements like the original LGA2011, the electrical signals are different, that's why it's not working. Most likely you would kill it, if you install your i7-3960X on a X99 motherboard. 😮

Hello

The two keys are also in a slightly different position so the 3960X will not physically fit in the 2011-3 socket.

Good point, IMC DDR3 for DDR4 would definitely not work:D...totally forgot about this one :)

Oh, you're right, the key locations are different. Didn't know about this difference.

And now for the reason why you cannot use your 3960X on a 2011-3/X99 Motherboard, basically DDR4 is the reason. The IMC on your CPU is only compatible with DDR3 and not DDR4.

So you say that if i buy one X99 motherboard i can put inside one LGA 2011 CPU right?Or i must buy directly the LGA 2011-3?
