Graphics GTX card works perfect in 3rd PCI-E slot, BUT NOT IN 4th. WHY?

Hi folks! Sso proud to own the X99 Rampage V Extreme  First some technodelicious SPECS: Intel 5820K | Noctua NH-D15 | 16GB | Samsung 950 pro 512GB | W7 64 | 970 GTX | 470 GTX | Antec Platinum 850 | Corsair D700...

In case you wondered what the hell that prehisoric dinnaussaur vga card 470 GTX is doing in a X99 rig? Well firstly my old wacom tablet has an analog dvi connector that only fits the 470, secondly it seems that when using the 470 gtx as a dedicated physics, it releaves the 970, improving the minimum FPS for a smoother feel!

ONE PROBLEM...
I want to place this ancient non-UEFI 470 gtx in the lowest 4th PCI-E slot, however the bios does not recognize the card when its sitting there! It does work perfectly when its sitting in the 3rd PCI-E slot! But I want it in the 4th slot! All jumpers on the little red pci-e jumberbox are left ON and the mobo is receiving power from the 12v molex. Whats going on?

There is no problem, apart from you not reading the manual. using the 5820 CPU with 28 PCIE lanes means the 4th red PCIE slot is not in use. Simple as.

Even with a 40 lane CPU the M.2 slot shares the 8 pcie lanes with the lowest pcie slot, so with a M.2 card installed in the M.2 port there is only 4 pcie lanes available, Nvidia graphics cards require 8 lanes minimum so it will not work in that slot

quite a few threads around the internet with 480's in a 4x slot running SLI etc.

Sure, because they aren't using M.2.

Edit: oh, I misread I think. But I think it is correct that a gpu needs 8 lanes minimum so something's odd there.

a sli from nvidia needs a 8x to work. anything else would work with less lanes as gpu.

Hi folks and HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR to you too 🙂
Well I did read may many reviews (and hence plunged into this X99 extreme V) and what I understood is that the 28 lanes are actually the maximum USED up lanes which could be USED simultaneously when and IF all those slots are FILLED up! But what I now hear is that these lanes are PRERESERVED slots???

IS THAT the reason why my msi 970 GTX is seen as an 8x speed card in the bios?

Such a pity I cannot place it in the 1st pci_e because of the extruding noctua gigantuous heatsink, and in 2nd or 3rd it is seen as an 8X card. While I have 28 lanes free! (minus M.2 = 4 lanes)... Mmm I misread the whole thing then. These slots are prereserved lots assigned pre built?

Just read the manual, it is explained in there about 28 lane assignment.
