D6 Error with 1080 in PCIE Slot 2, Rampage V Edition 10

Build:*
Rampage V Edition 10
Intel Core I7 6900k
Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB, 2800
Samsung 950 Pro M.2, 512GB
3x EVGA*GTX 1080 FTW
Corsair AX1500i

I have a dumb annoying problem. My new computer build works fine as long as I don't put a GTX 1080 in PCIE Slot 2. Pulling everything out of the board and only one graphics card at a time, every slot the 1080 fits in works except PCIE Slot 2 (Slots 1, 3, 4).*

Trying to boot the system with a 1080 in slot 2 (while it is the only card in the board) results in a D6 error non-boot. *If I put that same card, or any of my three 1080's in any other slot, the board boots. I have tried this with all three GTX 1080's, the result is the same for each card.*

Here is were it get's strange: I also have threevEVGA GTX 970 FTW's, and one EVGA GTX980 FTW left from two previous computers. *If i put any of these cards in slot two alone, the computer boots. No error.*

I only get an error when I put a GTX 1080 in PICE Slot 2.*

I have cleared the cmos, reseated the cards, reseated the cpu, powered down, pulled the battery, tried two different bios revisions 1002, 0901, booted the system from cardboard. *Is this a defect in my motherboard, or is the Rampage V Edition incapable of handling a GTX 1080 FTW in it's 8x PICE Slot 2, even if it works in Slot 4, or do I need to RMA my mobo?

If you plug in one card in slot 1 and one in slot 2, with display output from the first, does both cards show up in GPU Post? You can also check if the two LEDs light up next to the PCIE-switch. Second thing to try would be to disable slot 1,3,4 and see if that helps when the card is plugged in to slot 2.

Have you tested each GPU separately to make sure they are working?

Thanks for the recco, I ended up just getting another board (x99e WS w/USB3.1), and everything works rock solid. I did try your first suggestion, and I only got video out of SLI slot 1.

The problem intitally started because I put all three cards in, and only the cards in sli slots 1 and 3 were showing video. The light came for PCIE slot 2 only when there wasn't a 1080 in the slot. Very weird series of events.

Did not try disabling the slots, because ultimately, the goal was to run three 1080's, as each one runs a 31" monitor, so if it worked with PCIE slots disabled, that still wouldn't have fixed the issue.

Thanks guys for time and effort. I still don't know if it was the motherboard that need an RMA or what, but all is well and working now, rock solid, 4.5ghz overclock, and it's super fast. So I'm grinning from ear to ear.

It also turns out the features on the WS work better for my workload than the Rampage anyway.

Cheers,
