It does not sound to me like he is having the same issue. Previously no amount of switching toggling etc would bring the screen back. Only power off/on. This sounds more like a game related issue to me....
Holy moly if my monitor started smoking I would have immediately returned it, you are brave! If you still can at all take that sucker back or demand a replacement from Asus. Absolutely no way you should mess with something like that in your house.
To summarize where we are at there are sporadic reports of users "believing" their issues were fixed. I have seen mixed thoughts on why this is, I have the software console open, I disabled VRR etc. Sometimes they come back weeks later with the issue...
