As my understanding it mainly affect client, except the CVE 2017-13082 (related to 802.11r) affect an AP, so if the router don't work as a client, or don't use 802.11r I think it will be safe. Please correct me if I am wrong.
To get 5.1 via optical, you need dolby digital live or DTS connect (it just a software/driver). ASUS hardly include them, other manufacturer most likely iincluded.google for dobly home theater, you may find useful info.
I understand active cooling quite troublesome, but at least make it optional, some ppl may need it.p.s. I have a sabertooth x79, even with active cooling, the PCH always go over 45C when idle, cause my room is really hot.
