If you've tried re-seating then the only option is to replace the cable.In theory, a 2x8pin to 12VHPWR cable offers slightly more fault tolerance but ultimately, 12VHPWR is inherently flawed.

There is currently no real way of telling if a new GPU will cause width issues in your case until you actually try to install it. If you had a card from the same manufacturer already in your case, maybe you can compare the widths in the specification...
