ProArt Studiobook Pro 15 W500 overheating

I have this ASUS ProArt Studiobook Pro 15 W500, model W500G5T. And it's overheating from me just opening a web browser.

I'm using Firefox, so when I turn it on and open up FF the fan starts going nuts in less than a minute. I have maybe 15 tabs open now. Nothing major. And if I go to YouTube and start watching video it just goes nuts. The top of the keyboard get really hot to the touch.

I know that there could be some rough app taking up CPU resources, so I watch that. Here's the performance info from the Task Manager. As you can see there's not much there:

I also went to this page and updated all the drivers.

The issue didn't go away.

As expected, this laptop is out of warranty now. So any suggestions what shall I do to stop it from overheating?

I had the same issue with my W500. Ended up having to remove the heatsink/heatpipe assembly and pull the fans. There was a tremendous amount of fuzz, cat hair and "stuff" collected between the fans and the radiator. This is not accessible without removing the fans & heatpipes.

Following this cleaning, you need to remove all remnants of thermal paste, apply new thermal paste and put it all back together. Not a hard job, but a stupid design, IMHO!

With 2 cats in the house, I usually end up doing this every 3 months, or else the whole thing throttles to the point of being unuseable.

Good luck!

Also, forgot to mention. I set my ProArt Creator Hub to start with Windows login and ensure the fan speed is set to Run at Full Speed (about 6300 RPM). Anything lower than this and I see my CPU temps start to climb & spike. Not an ideal solution, but keeps the laptop alive!

hi,

are you sure proart creator hub allows control fan speed? i dont see such option and the cpu fan somehow shows 0:

Any ideas? My fans are always running on low speed even if the CPU or GPU gets super hot, which eventually shuts down if it's over 97/98C.

Click on the right arrow at the bottom of the screen, slide over to the panel called "Fan Profile"

Cheers

Thanks a lot. I did that until the end but there is no fan profile section like yours. I guess my laptop model doesnt allow this.

You might have already done this, but I would completely uninstall everything related to Pro Art Creator do a fresh download and install.

The W500 was giving me fan problems with Pro Art Creator for a while and this solved the issue.

I wish that Asus would give an option to set the fan speed in Registry instead of loading this bloated package.

Good luck

thx a lot, yes i did that. actually i didnt have anything else so i only installed the proart creator hub and then tried ghelper and the dev said by looking at the logs, it's unable to set fan speed and said if your laptop doesnt allow this then ghelper cant do it also.

Here's a last stab. I can't recall whether the fan showed in the BIOS of our W500 or the W700.

Maybe it's possible to set the fan speed profile somewhere in the BIOS?

that was the first place i checked unfortunately asus locked this laptop pretty good. there is no setting for changing profiles or fan speed.

not only that they even made sure that you need a special key to open this laptop that only asus have, which means you wont be able to repair it yourself. it was mentioned in a youtube review also i think LTT video.

yay ASUS!
