ASUS TUF A17 (FA706QM) – Random Black Screen on Boot (Windows & Linux)

Kuroi043
Level 7

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a persistent black screen on boot issue with my ASUS TUF A17 (FA706QM) and trying to determine whether this is a firmware, EC, or power-management problem. Laptop powers on (keyboard lights) and Screen stays completely black System is unresponsive and requires a forced shutdown

What I’ve tested Switched from Windows to Linux → black screen still persists rules out an OS-level issue

RAM testing: tested both RAM sticks individually Currently running with one RAM stick only

BIOS updated via ASUS EZ Flash GPU works normally once the system boots Power drain (temporary fix – works every time)

The only reliable way to recover from the black screen is a full power drain: Shut down the laptop Disconnect the AC charger Hold the power button for 30–40 seconds Reconnect AC and power on This fixes the issue every single time, but the problem comes back later, especially after sleep or hibernate.

My suspicion : This strongly feels like a sleep / hibernate / EC power state issue: Laptop sometimes fails to wake from sleep After sleep or hibernate, the next boot often results in a black screen On Linux, /sys/power/state shows freeze mem disk Using zram swap Looks like the EC or firmware doesn’t properly reinitialize the display/GPU after low-power states

Is this a known EC / BIOS bug on the FA706QM? Has anyone permanently fixed this via BIOS settings, EC reset, or disabling sleep/hibernate?

Could this still be a motherboard or EC hardware fault, even though power drain always revives it? Any insight or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙏
