Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing a significant overheating issue with my ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) GU605 U9 4090. When the screen turns off or I lock the computer (Windows key + L), it enters a state where it becomes extremely hot. The strange part is that the fans do not spin up to cool it down.
As soon as I unlock the laptop, the fans immediately kick in at high speed, and the temperature quickly returns to normal. I've checked Task Manager, and there are no resource-intensive processes running in the foreground.
I ran a Sleep Study report (powercfg /SleepStudy), and it seems the issue is related to the Modern Standby mode. The report identified several components that are preventing the system from entering a deep sleep state:
Top Offenders:
\_SB.PC00.VMD0 (Intel RST VMD Controller)
WU-UpdateOrchestratorClient and other Windows Update services
Microsoft.GamingApp
Active GPU: In some sleep sessions, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU remained active, which likely contributes significantly to the heat generation.
It appears the laptop is not entering a true low-power state, causing components to remain active and generate heat without the cooling system responding.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
