Zephyrus Duo 16 airplane mode blocked

I have a problem with my ZD16. Today I downloaded one game (100 gig). When the download finished, the airplane mode activated automatically. Then, after checking what was going on, I noticed  a failure message on the wifi card, saying that it could not initiate (code 10).

I resetted the bios configuration and checked all the options related to radio management, and nothing.

Is it possible that the card burned out or is defective?

I assume it is the MediaTek card and it happened after a reboot. If so, it is a known issue with MediaTek WiFi cards on many laptops and AMD motherboards. Hold down the power button for 60 seconds for a hard reset (ASUS help states 40 seconds, but I had to do it 60 seconds), the WiFi should start working normally again.

yeah, it was a MediaTke and the hard reset restored it. Thank you very much!

Do you know if it is possible to change that card for an Intel AX210 or a better one?

Yeah, if you are a handy person it's an easy upgrade, you could get a Intel AX210 for $20-30 which is far more reliable.

I'd do it myself but still haven't experience any issues with the Mediatek MT7922 that is use on my Zephyrus, idk if it's a newer model than the troubled one, or the newer 2023 AMD platform does not interfere with it. Or I don't use it enough, most of the time it's wired tbh.

It does seem that not everyone experiences this issue, I've had it once and I hope I will never forget how to solve it. It is an easy swap, but keep in mind that if you need to have any warranty repairs done at any point, they'll probably want the original pieces the laptop came with, so you may need to swap it back for that.

I found the solution thanks to the MediaTek WiFi card causing issues on some AMD motherboards with on-board WiFi, not specifically on laptops or on the Zephyrus Duo 16. It is very much a YMMV situation, you might never have the issue occur again. I'd wait to see if the issue repeats, then it is time to reconsider upgrading to Intel.

Yeah, maybe for people that are experiencing this issue the card should be exchanged in warranty, but then you are not going to be able to use the laptop for a fair bit of time.

I'm not happy with my unit, not because of the wifi, but tons of quirks it has. Everyday I spend about 10 minutes trying for the thing to boot up and have everything that is attached to it working properly. I have a dock station, 3 external monitors, a streamdeck, dac, a few other things. I've rocked the same setup of peripheral though a couple of surfaces pro, and last year ROG Z13, no problems whatsoever.

The Duo STRUGGLES with the monitors, even if the main one is connected directly through the HDMI port (all 3 monitor routed through the dock station with my past hardware 100% free of problems). Have to restart 2-3 times depending on the day.

The thing does not sleep properly, does not hibernate, is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW booting up, it does not retain color profile data -1 out of 5 times I have to correct color calibration for the monitors-, it annoys me to my core, worst hardware purchase in my life by far being a $5k ask to boot. I should have sent it back during the return window, but somehow expected things would be ironed out with software updates. I still hope but will get rid of it at the first opportunity that presents if it does not.
