TAB, WINDOWS, and F1 keys stop working intermittently

New Zephyrus G16. TAB, WINDOWS, and F1 keys frequently stop working. Sometimes, for no clear reason, they'll start working again for a short period of time.

Looking around Reddit and this forum, it seems that I am not alone with this very specific issue. I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution? (I really, really don't want to have to send my laptop in for repair as I need it for work.)

  • External keyboard works fine.
  • I've checked for BIOS and Windows updates.
  • Restarted many times.

Any ideas?

Check for loose connections:

  1. Sometimes, the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard can get a bit loose.
  2. If you're comfortable opening up your laptop (and it won't void your warranty!), CAREFULLY check if the connection is secure.
  3. There are tons of guides and videos online specific to your Zephyrus G16 model.
  4. But be warned, proceed with caution! Don't want you frying anything!

Driver Reinstallation :

  1. You mentioned checking for updates, but try this: completely uninstall the keyboard drivers from Device Manager, then restart your laptop.
  2. Windows will usually automatically reinstall them.
  3. Sometimes, a fresh install can clear up weird driver conflicts.

Live Boot Linux:

  1. This is a bit of a wildcard, but it can help pinpoint the problem.
  2. Create a bootable USB drive with a Linux distro (like Ubuntu).
  3. If the keys work fine in the Linux environment, it's definitely a Windows/driver issue.
  4. If they still don't work, it's almost certainly a hardware fault.

If none of that works, sadly, it might be time to contact ASUS support.
