2023 G16 - Try to run Dual Channel or Max Out Ram?

Hi all!

I have a ROG Zephyrus G16 GU603VI 2023 model.  I want to upgrade the RAM, but the last time I put ram into a PC was over 20 years ago...Yeah...Im lost haha.

I mainly use this for video editing and general computing, but I lean on it a bit when I edit and process.  I also do some modeling and CAD work occasionally.

Im trying to determine if I should add 16 gb ram, so it will run in dual channel mode (will it do that?) or if I should just get 32 gb and max the laptop out at 48 gb.

Does anyone have any input on this?  And can someone point me to ram that is compatible for whichever path I should take?  Like... a link haha.  When I search there are SO many choices I get turned around.

Thanks in advance!

Justin

Hello,

This model has soldered RAM and some do not have the extra DIMM SLOT. (G16 GU603VI-XXXXX) Do you know the exact one you have or if you take the cover off can you see a DIMM slot?

Also with that being said should it have a soldered Memory chip + DIMM slot you will need to choose the memory carefully, whilst they both run on different channels and can run at different timings you still need to run a close match but even then it may not work.

What is the spec of the current memory? Use CPUZ to check, example here.

Thanks for the response!!!  All the documentation I have says I have 16 gb soldered memory and one open ddr4 slot.  Here is a screenshot from CPUZ:

I cant find any other model number info other than GU603VI, I know some sites show extra numbers/letters but I cant confirm.  I havent taken the cover off, but I plan to install a second SSD so figured I would do it all at once. Actually the bottom says "GU603VI-G16.I74070, but I think that just says its an I7 and has the RTX 4070 graphics.

I keep reading I have to be careful what ram I get, so thats kind of why Im asking, especially if anyone has the same machine and has upgraded.  And if I should go another 16, assuming it will run dual channel, or max it out at 48 and not worry about dual channel.

Thanks!

Looks like your soldered memory runs at 2666MHz so for a closest match a 16GB 2666MHz sodimm module with the same timings, 19,19,19, X

Crucial RAM, check your SPD tab as see if it shows the manufacturer of the current 16GB, might be Micron (MT), aka Crucial.

Thanks for the continued responses!  I thought this ram was supposd to be 3200 mhz?

Here is the SPD:

here is another shot from the memory tab...the values fluctuate:

This one is more accurate, the SPD part number is 3200MHz. Based on that, go for a 3200MHZ module with those timings, 22-22-22-X, from Crucial.com

Ok Thanks!!

SHould I go for another 16gb or max it on out with a 32?

Much appreciated!

Justin

I would suggest another 16GB for the best possible match and performance, do you need more than 32GB?

Thats a great question.  No...probably not.  16 gb has been "ok"...just looking to be future proof a little and make things run a little smoother when Im leaning on the PC.  Just wasnt sure if "go big of go home" applied here.  Ill gladly spend less money lol.

Im going to order the Crucial 16gb today.  Ill follow up with results!

How about SSD's?  Im looking for at least a 2TB drive, but would go 4TB depending on price.  Im looking for speed, as Ill be transferring video files on/off of it, backing up projects, etc.  Have a recommended brand/type?

Thank you!

Is this for internal use or an external drive? (how are you transferring the files as this could be the slowest point / limit)

For internal Crucial, Samsung or Kingston would be my choice, the ones with 5 year warranty.

7000MB/S read / Write speeds and Gen 4.0.

No large heatsinks as spacing will be an issue.
