What is a good purchase of RAM for a G74SX...

I have 8 mb of RAM in my G74SX

I intend to upgrade it to at least 16MB.

If I understand it correctly all I7 processor (2670QM, 2.2Hz) G74s can be upgraded to 16MB ram because they are quad core byt dual core processor versions can only be upgraded to 8 MB Ram.

From my Swedish manual:

"Minne DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 4 x SO-DIMM platser för utbyggnad upp till 16 G SDRAM (Quad Core), 2 x SO-DIMM platser för utbyggnad upp till 8 G SDRAM (Dual Core)"

So what memory sticks should I purchase? 2x 8 MB ram and remove the 2x 4mb starting sticks?

Or should I just add 2 more 4 mb sticks for a total of 4x 4MB ram?

Is there any chance I could use more than 16 MB ram in the future upgrading the BIOS?

What brand/quality/speed etc should I buy (1333mhz I understand)

Here is the shop I will buy from. The language is weird but I believe one can interpret the tech facts anyways.

If anyone could give me good advice which ones I should order it would be great. I don't think the support department of the store itself could answer this questions very well.

The reason why I'm buying the RAM update from here is that the G74SX was ordered from here and I want them to be from the same place. Price is of a lesser concern.

Or should I order from ASUS themselves to have memory banks that match the ones already in?

Thanks in advance!

2 x 8GB will be the best in order to take advantage of dual channel memory usage, though an additional 2 x 4 GB (plus the 2 x 4 GB sticks already in your g74) will be cheaper.

The brand should not matter too much I think as long as the sticks match (best chance of compatibility).

There is a thread where this has been covered. Its a little buried now.

I bought this ram and it works great:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233265

This laptop with the 2670 can handle 32GB. Its just not tested and verified by Intel, but people with 16GB+ have no issues doing so. You can go upto 32GB without issue.
(ROG has simply become too expensive compared to the competition with same specs... 😞 )

You do need to be running Windows Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise. Windows Home Premium won't use more than 16Gb.

That's a nice heads-up. The G74SX I bought indeed came with WIN7 premium. I think by the time I actually *need* more than 16 GB RAM I will probably have installed another OS in any case.

2 modules of 8 GB Ram seems like the best investment then.

What is the deal with the Mhz rate? Can I buy faster then 1333 mhz? Is it worth it? Ill read the dead thread and check back again.

Ok. According to that major thread 4x4 1333 mhz is quite easy to upgrade to.

Going to 1600 mhz or 2x 4GB + 2x8 GB is a bit trickier.

I wonder if one set of memories combined with another brand is a good idea?

These maybe: (1333Mhz)

or These: (1600 Mhz)

Corsairs are good, yup. I have 4x8GB of those same 1333MHz sticks from them you referenced above. If 16GB is your goal my advice is 2x8GB of the 1333 MHz speed stuff. Unless you're running memory-bandwidth benchmarks all the time you will not notice any significant difference in performance between 1333 and 1600MHz. See Anadtech's article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3

Buy the 1333MHz RAM, save some money, put towards a real performance kicker: an SSD.

Oh, and don't mix brands or even two different models of sticks from the same manufacturer. Asking for problems, that...

I think you're probably right since at this point gamers don't benefit from more than even 8GB. Unless you are doing virtualization, ramdisk, or media manipulation in memory this upgrade will be a waste of money. You didn't really mention why you were upgrading so I thought that was worth pointing out.

I'm upgrading because:

a) I want fast performance in windows

b) To gain better performance in games

c) To secure future need for +8 GB RAM. For this purpose I consider buying 4 sticks of identical memory so I don't have to mix with the original 2 noname 4GB sticks the G74S came with. 4x 8GB RAM of 1333 or 1600 Mhz memory might be over the top but it would be fun to try it out and see if I can notice any real performance gains.

Cost is of lesser concern in this situation.

I wasn't aware that games get no benefit at all from +8GB RAM. Isn't it weird som many PC comes with and are upgraded to more than that when their main purpose is gaming?
