Touchpad has stopped working on GL753VE - solved?

Hi,

Bought this laptop less than a week ago. The touchpad was working fine out of the box, but somewhere in the past day or two of installing programs and drivers and transferring files over, it has stopped completely. I'm not sure exactly when because I've been using a USB mouse.

The touchpad does work fine at the Windows login screen. It's enabled in the BIOS. FN+F9 gives me the hourglass cursor for half a second but does nothing else. All other function keys work. The touchpad shows as disabled in the ROG Gaming Center, but when I select the enable option, nothing changes. It reverts to the off position when I close and re-open the program. Disabling and re-enabling in device manager doesn't help. I've tried disabling Windows automatic driver updates, then uninstalling and reinstalling the ATK package, the ELAN driver, SmartGesture, and the ROG Gaming Center -- nothing.

I don't know what else to do besides completely reinstalling Windows

Hi, I have a Strix GL753 VD.
"FN+F9 gives me the hourglass cursor for half a second but does nothing else." Fn+F9 should start/stop the touchpad with an on-screen "window" of a touchpad appearing saying "Touchpad is disabled/enabled". See attached screenshot. Are other hotkeys working? ATK ACPI driver & ATK hotkey tool has to be installed BEFORE you install other drivers (touchpad, audio, Wifi) because this is ASUS.

I also have several major problems with this laptop, one of those being the touchpad functioning incorrectly, I think I will start a new thread for the problems with this modell (GL753)

The touchpad: when scrolling with two fingers in web browsers (Opera, Chrome, Firefox), Adobe reader, Open office, Mozilla thunderbird, the page just jumps back randomly. I already have the latest drivers from the ASUS site, doesn't work. Since I am using a NVME M.2 SSD with a clean Win10 64bit install, I still have the factory preinstalled Windows 10 64 bit on the 2.5 HDD. The problem is present when booting to that Windows too. Pinch zoom is off from mouse and touchpad settings. Reading this forum I realized that several ROG laptops (other series) have the same problem or other touchpad problems. I think it's driver related. ASUS, we are waiting.

Yeah, in looking around for a solution, I found tons of Asus notebook users with similar touchpad issues. Actually, like you said, just a lot of issues in general. On the first day I myself spent like 4-6 hours trying to figure out the GPU driver problem.

Initially, like the day I got it, FN+9 did work correctly to toggle the touchpad and showed the popup as attached. Sadly not the case anymore. Just to be sure, I tried one more time uninstalling and then reinstalling ATK and the touchpad driver in the correct order with restarts in between, but that didn't work.

The problem you mentioned having sounds related to their Gesture software.

IDK. Not happy. I hope a fix is on the horizon. Wondering if I should even bother contacting ASUS support

Hi, not sure if this can help, but if you still have your USB mouse plugged in, try to unplug it if you haven't already to see if it makes any difference for the touchpad.
If it does make a difference, there is probably some setting checked to disable the touchpad when the external USB mouse is plugged in, so we just want to find that setting and change it.
There should be a setting in Windows 10 ver1607 for it now and trying to check for Windows updates and restarting Windows instead of shutting down are a couple more ideas.

Otherwise, feel free to request more suggestions if it's still not working. Thanks.

Yeah, the option for leaving the touchpad enabled was still checked in both Windows and Gesture.

HOWEVER, it actually just started working again out of the blue. I've done nothing since my last post besides some work in Word. No idea what the cause or the solution was but hopefully I'm good now. Computers lol.

Thanks

Hmm.. glad to hear it's working now and hopefully it stays okay.
Yeah, not sure if this was related at all, but I always like to try a Windows 8/10 restart instead of shutdown for any possible software issues since shutdowns in Windows 8/10 don't really 'clean up' the software like in Windows 7 and you need to 'restart' in Windows 8/10 to do this for whatever reason (actually may be related to the 'fast startup' setting in Windows 8/10 if anybody cares).

Thanks for letting us know too.

Hi KeepItCrunchy, unfortunately the joy won't last long, on my rig I use mostly sleep mode but also restart and sometimes after a restart some of the ASUS software do not work. For example Gaming center or Splendid cannot be started from Start menu, hotkeys for Splendid presets do nor work. No error message whatsoever. I use PCs from the old DOS days, I've seen a lot of driver issues over the years, I think this behaviour is driver related (ATK driver not loading correctly sometimes??). I haven't checked event viewer yet, but I will. After a few restarts everything seems to work correctly. I would like to mention that this behaviour is present on the preinstalled Windows also, not just the "clean" Windows.

All in all this touchpad issue isn't a major inconvenience, I need this laptop for its speed+mobility, that's why I'm not sending it back. You can always use a mouse if you want to work on something, but I expected more. I like touchpads. And yes, I have a problem with the Intel GPU also but it's complicated and related only to some software that I use for work, so I'm not sure who's fault it is. Latest Nvidia drivers recommended by Nvidia's own updater installed with errors, I had to revert drivers. So :). What can I say?

Try hotfix 378.77 for the Nvidia driver if you haven't. That worked for me.
