Strix scar edition GL703VM hot and loud ?

Evening folks, last week I purchased this laptop;

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234746&cm_re=asus_scar-_-34-234-746-_-Produ...

After receiving it, to my surprise, I noticed that on top of producing as much heat as a jet, it also made the same sound!

Jokes aside, the laptop is very hot and loud.

I did unvervolt the cpu and the gpu and while it helped, the temps are still high.

I contacted Asus and according to them everything is fine and it fits in their standards.

At this point, I'm ready to simply void the warranty and remove and replace the toothpaste they use.

I'd like to know if anyone has any picture of the inside of laptop? I removed the backplate yesterday and found that the the copper heatsink have some kind of black backplate.

Anyway, if anybody has any images/how to guide, I will be grateful!

Yesterday i clean my gl703vm with compressed air and temps go down about 15°C. Today i gonna change the thermal paste on CPU and GPU and I will see if it will help.

I totally clean interior with compressed air and change the thermal paste. Now i have 27-40°C on CPU and 30-36°C on GPU in normal use, and in game (Witcher 3) i have 68-92°C on CPU and 68-74°C on GPU.
But now, dont know why the ROG key doesnt work, maybe i dont put something properly 😞

Maybe, everything is cramped togheter, so it's easy to miss something. There's a huge difference between 68 and 92, even if the 7700hq can run up to 100 degrees, anything above 90 seems high for me.

I made a 15min test with the GL703VM Scar edition with AIDA64, which test CPU + GPU + everything else at the same time. I have -140mv stable undervolt in CPU (7700hq) and I run my GPU (1060 6gb) @1850MHz / 825mV. Normally it would have about 950mV with this MHz, so it's about -125mV underclock. Like this, it can run AIDA64 without throttling (100% CPU + 100% GPU). This test was made lid down and the sound levels are reasonable, because with the underclocks it doesn't need to cool so much.

Right now my CPU idles at 41 degrees (21 room teperature) and GPU at 43. The laptop is almost silent when doing normal stuff with the lid down. I have it connected to a display with DP-cable.

I'll check it later. i fix my problem with fn key and rog key. I turn the app off unnececerly.

Hi all

The technical support has been doing the confirmation of this phenomenon. Sorry for the trouble.

Do you mind writing a manual fan control software for GL503 and GL703 series?

My notebook is not so hot, about 70 degrees BUT its very loud. I can give up some heat in exchange of noise.

Can confirm. Have the laptop for 2 weeks now. It's awesome, but the fans get really loud when the temps seem to not go over 70C. I wish I could manually adjust them or atleast have a firmware update to better control them.

But they wont care. I have 30 day return duration. 21 left. If they dont find a solution in 21 days. I will return it. Its unplayable.

I mean, I understand it's a thinner than normal 1060gtx laptop, so it's not abnormal for it to heat up more than usual. But fan speed should be adjustable or fixed since the temps don't warrant those speeds imo. I wonder if repasting the cpu and gpu will have any effect (although I don't want to void my warranty incase I decide to return). It's a good laptop but at this price you'd think problems like these shouldn't go through.

Since Asus moderator basically confirmed they are testing to for this issue, thought I'd help out as much as I can.

My theory is that the fan software/firmware is the culprit although it's hard to confirm that with the resources I have. I've tied numerous software to try and check the exact fan speed but the only one I managed to get working for the GL703VM oddly enough seemed to be the Android ROG app. The Windows one does not show fan speed (at least I couldn't find it) but when connected to the app, it shows although not sure how accurate. Judging by the noise I'd say it's pretty accurate.

So from my testing, it seems the fans do not slow down fast enough when the temps are dropping. The temps stay almost the same however the fans keep ramping up or stay at high. This happens during games as well which I think is the main problem, since when temps drop (maybe in not so graphically intense part of the game), fans don't turn down quick enough, and instead remain at max for long time.

Here's some stats of playing Dungeons 2 for an hour.

After turning off the game, temps instantly dropping (less than 10sec), however fans remain on at max speed
CPU 69 4500RPM
GPU 66 4500RPM

After a minute, still maxed out fans (Screens https://photos.app.goo.gl/Z2ql8o0LxtyXG79d2 , https://photos.app.goo.gl/iQEmvf2kK07ff7th2)
CPU 63C 4400RPM

After 5mins of turning off the game (doing some web browsing, youtube), fans drop down to normal and quiet (https://photos.app.goo.gl/lW8jx5L6HZob4QTi2):
CPU 62C 2900RPM
GPU 63C 3000RPM

p.s. (I've undervolted the CPU with Intel XTU by 100mV which I guess makes the Gaming Center unable to get the CPU stats, except the fans, but I was using HWinfo to check the temps while looking at the fanspeed on the app)

p.s2 will upload screens from the app later
