I bought an Asus Strix Scar 18 2025 laptop in pre-sale and I have a question, is it worth installing Samsung 9100 Pro drives on the PCIe Gen 5 interface, if the laptop only supports PCIe Gen 4? (Asus failed here by not installing PCIe Gen5 slots in the latest 2025 laptops) Is it enough to buy Samsung 990Pro drives? Because there won't be any big differences in speeds?
Thank you for your answer.

I'm trying to figure out something similar, but with a heatsink.

Hi,
I had the same problem and the computer store told me that Samsung drives with heatsinks won't fit because they are too tall. Secondly, I think I'll stick to buying the 990 pro Pcie gen 4 drives since the laptop doesn't have a Pcie gen 5 connector and the 9100 pro is also more expensive.
If you do check if those drives with heatsinks will fit, let me know. Thanks.

Hello,
Power and heat is lower on the 9100 pro and given the drive can exceed Gen4 speeds it should be more efficient on the transfers, one would expect the storage controller to have lower latency / better performance than the 990 pro.

Using a Gen5 drive on a Gen4 system may not provide significant benefits, as the drive will operate at Gen4 speeds, which are already sufficient for most tasks. The performance difference is often minimal, especially in gaming and general applications. That said. The cost difference is substantial. I would suggest a Good Gen4.
