ROG Strix GL703GS-E5011T draining battery while on mains power

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me with this issue. I just bought an ASUS ROG Strix GL703GS-E5011T and so far I am loving the power of the system. The only issue I've ran into is while gaming, while on the AC power supply, it appears to drain the battery. Is this normal for the system or have I got a fault? What will happen when the battery drains to 0? This could possibly be a deal breaker for me and I may have to return the system.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Posting a response I received via PM

Hi Steve,

Sorry but for some reason as a new user I cannot reply to your post.

Normally while playing games such as BF4 or PUBG the battery will drain from 100% to 95%, this is normal to protect the battery / battery life and it goes into something like a trickle charge.

For it to drain to 0% is not right.

I know if for example my laptop is low on charge it'll still charge to +95% even while playing an intensive game.

May be worth trying AIDA64 to see what kind of charge you are getting but something is not right either way.

Sorry if I cannot help further.

As Jaison explained, it is normal for the laptop to stop charging the battery when it is fully charged. It is to protect and prolong the life of the battery. How low does it go when power is connected? If it drops below 90%, RMA to have it checked out.

Yeei! I can post now.

Sorry Steve I forgot to add, is the charge status LED white or orange at the time?

I am not sure how good AIDA64 is for measuring the battery but right now I am browsing and charging from 50% and AIDA64 show (go to "Computer" > "Power Management") a charge rate of 37463 mW.

FYI - It's now at 60% in about 10 / 15 mins (seems a bit quick)

The charge status LED is showing as orange.

AIDA64 is showing a charge rate jumping around 5,000mW when the game is full screen, 15,000mW when minimized, and 20,000mW when the game isn't running.

I did capture the below screenshot with a bit of quick alt tabbing.

I'll allow the batter to discharge down to about 50% and do a bit more testing later.

Edit: The only difference that made was the charge rate increased to 37,684mW when the game wasn't running, still battery is draining while running.

Thanks again for the help,
Steve

Please RMA to have the laptop checked out. It shouldn't be discharging at 44%.

Yeah totally agree with MasterC and thanks for providing the screenshots as the "discharging" seems to be the key here.

If you're from the UK and if I am allowed I can tell you that currently the E5012T model with the 512GB + 1TB drive is available for less than your 256GB model.

Not sure if I am allowed to provide the details but from a well known retailer and may be worth you getting a refund on your one. I actually returned my old one back to Amazon and purchased my current one from this other retailer for this reason (also the right button below the trackpad was a bit grindy when clicked on).

Thanks guys, appreciate your help with this. I will RMA to the retailer.

Guys, this isn't a one-off issue. Asus hasn't tested the H series CPUs properly for power consumption and have provided chargers that seem to deliver not enough power. I a, having a similar issue as the original poster but not as bad. I have, however, tested this scenario with different games at different graphics settings and with the different fan profiles.

The more graphic intensive work you try with overboost mode on, the more power the processors would draw and the chances of a discharge goes up.

When I am playing GTA 5 or Witcher at high graphics settings, but have the fan in the balanced mode, the laptop charges, albeit a little slower than usual.
The moment I turn on the Overboost mode, it starts to discharge (even from 100%)

I have played for hours with overboost on (3-4) and have only noticed discharge of upto 5%. The moment I turn the fan into silent ot balanced, the charging restarts. I don't think it's the trickle charge thing that phones nowadays have with fast charging

I have the same laptop, and yet, the same problem. My battery drains to 67% while playing games, not really intensive, like call of duty world at war, an old game actually..
