Rog G733QR and installing Zorin OS Linux

FyraDrake

Since the end of service of Win 10, I have been seeking an alternative OS, that being Zorin OS Pro.

I have tried every format, every command line suggested via Zorin support systems, and even AI search.

While trying to even load Zorin from the USB drive, every attempt so for has failed.

I have yet to even post past the splash page to be given the option to install.

Some say its the Nvida drivers, of which nomodeset=0 doesn't stop, I have also tried all of these:

amdgpu.dc=0

iacompute=0

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

nouveau.modeset=0

Has anyone any experience with Linux or even that the G733 is special on not wanting Linux?  Yes, secure boot is disabled its the only way to even load from a usb.

Hello,

How did you make the bootable USB drive as this can sometimes cause it to hang at the bootloader.

Using RUFUS you must make sure the partition scheme is set to GPT. Give this one a go and when it asks choose ISO mode.

Screenshot 2025-10-27 155338.png

Worked on a G16 2024 model laptop and I have the preferred GPU set to dGPU in the BIOS so it boots with the nvidia GPU by default.

Yes, I did switch to GPT format.

Every time it hangs during the second scan before loading or right when it completes.  I also have a G533 and was able to install in 10mins.

EFI 2gb / 1 Windows / unallocated free space

Ventoy > any linux .iso and install to unallocated free space (dual boot)

ps Zorin have problem delete boot menu after clean OS

Zalevskiy,

Here are the results - Still fails.

1st option from Zorin OS, no changes to cmd line1st option from Zorin OS, no changes to cmd line1st run with 3rd option Nvivda Drivers not change to cmd line1st run with 3rd option Nvivda Drivers not change to cmd line2nd run on 1st option, 1 change to cmd line nvidia-drm.modeset=12nd run on 1st option, 1 change to cmd line nvidia-drm.modeset=12nd run of 3rd option Nvidia drivers, 1 change to cmd line amdgpu.dc=02nd run of 3rd option Nvidia drivers, 1 change to cmd line amdgpu.dc=0

This is as far as I have every made it with all the runs.

Yes the percentage goes up in each image. But that is the fail point not 1 single run.

maybe try ventoy > winpe > chkdsk c: /f /r /x all partition

do you have security boot disabled? vmd disable? do your hidden partitions have mbr or gpt markup?

You'll probably need to recreate the bootloader, but I'm too lazy to explain it in detail. I gave up Zorin and switched to an Arch-based distro (cachyos).

Did you ever try skipping this part when booting (be quick with the Ctrl-C as once it gets going it might not stop)

Yes,

The normal thing I do is remove "quiet" so I can see the preboot and because I have used GPT on the usb before and watched that load so many times, I started using fsck.mode=skip in the cmd line.  Even then it will black screen right after the splash.  I normally do 10 min intervals to see if there is progress but I can also hit the num lock or cap locks key to see if it has frozen.

I have primarily determined that its just a bios/video issue with this specific Asus Rog - the G733QR - Mostly because of the duel video that it runs via AMD Radeon on the processor and the standalone Nvidia built in.

I also just finalized a TongFang X6 build (XMD Neo 16) that will be shipped this week.  I just wanted to load Linux on this beast before giving it up to someone else.
