Rog 16 Strix G614JV-AS74 Ram replacment question for a newbie

Hi, I have done a lot of research and I am still confused. I would like to upgrade my Ram which I believe is currently 16 GB. I am thinking of going to 32 or maybe 64 if you guys think it is worth it. I have used crucial and Samsung in the past ( Had others do the upgrade ) . I can handle the install but I am unsure what I need as I hear different sizes and MHZ.

Please advise on what I need and if and how to do any adjustments in the computer.

Thanks

Hello,

The easy subject first, 32GB or 64GB? My answer would be 32GB as anything over this will be unused and pointless. RAM is like storage space and only used if the system needs it, like if a program or game has so much going on it will load more things into RAM.

As to what MHz I think your one is 4800MHz (4800MT/s) but you can check using CPUZ software.

https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Download and run CPUZx64, once its open go to the SPD TAB and Memory TAB to see what you have.

Example here

And what memory brand? I'm a big fan of Kingston, their FURY Impact DDR PNP version has low latency timings.

But first check what you have and go from there 🙂

Anything over 32 is useless and pointless? With all due respect, I mean no offense here...that is one of the worst take/advice on upgrading RAM beyond 32GB. For one, some of us, if not the majority of individuals here on a Laptop Gaming forum would 9 times out of 10 prefer to have 64 GB of RAM instead of 32. I think of extra RAM akin to how I view my 2nd amendment right to own guns. I stay fully and overly armed not because I foresee a coming event or situation where I know I will need it. I am armed because I want to have it in case something ever does happen, rather than NOT have it and really NEED it. The same goes for having extra RAM. As a full time trader, 32 GB does not cut it. Having to run ATAS, EXOCharts, Trading View, and monitor my trading exchange all under the hood of my PC, I am 9.9 times out of 10 exceeding roughly 48-55 gigs of RAM usage at any given moment.....So for another $100 why WOULDN'T you spend the money on DOUBLING your RAM to have it as programs, games, and technology evolves over time using more and more RAM until one day you go to buy that new Call of Duty game only to find out you aren't able to play it because you are topped out at 32....GO FOR MAX RAM!!!!! (Unless ASUS states that there is an issue with how the MOBO or processor of your ROG takes on more RAM or states that the max capacity is below 64 GB. For those instances, stick with the manufacturer's recommendations aka ASUS.)

TWT out

My advice is based on gaming experiences for a laptop intended for gaming use and currently there is no game that will need over 32GB of RAM.

Obviously if your usage deems more than 32GB it would be useful but going for an upgrade that will never be used is simply a waste of money.

If I went with 5200 or 5600 MHZ would it work but I may not see more then 4800 MHZ?

Thank you for the help.

Yes but it also depends on the memory kit you choose as some can try to force a specific MHz so it may not work.

Also if it only supports 4800MHz you might want to consider choosing a 4800MHz kit with the lowest memory timings possible as this will have some benefit.

Gotcha, Like I said I am taking this all in as I am not really up on this stuff. Researching it people say it can take the Higher MHZ but a Bios tweak needs to be preformed. I am not even sure how much of a difference it makes.

Some laptops do have a BIOS option to enable the higher frequency to work, sadly ASUS ones don't.

Maybe +1-3 fps peak when gaming :), desktop PCs tend to benefit more as the CPUs run faster and can be overclocked further to make use of the extra memory bandwidth provided by the higher frequency RAM.

Okay so I should stick with 2 16 GB in teh 4800 MHZ range, I Probably will end up with the Fury Line.

What did CPUz show for the memory and SPD section? (if 4800MHz, then yes)
