"If I enable HAGS, I get micro stutters

Good day,

First, to my system:

  • Notebook: Asus Rog Strix Scar 16
  • CPU: Intel Core i9 13980hx
  • GPU: Geforce RTX 4080 Mobile
  • RAM: Kingston Fury 32 gb 5600mhz Ram Module
  • OS: Win 11

To my problem:

For months I have had problems with micro stutters, I have already tried everything possible:

  • No Gsync / no Vsync
  • Gsync / no Vsync
  • Gsync + Vsync
  • Each option with FPS Limit + without Limit
  • FPS Limit in Nvidia driver, Ingame Engine or MSI Afterburner or Rivatuner.
  • I have formatted the computer several times
  • GeForce Experience installed / uninstalled
  • Different power plan options
  • Different graphics settings (from everything low to everything high)
  • Different resolutions
  • Game Mode on / off
  • Fullscreen / Windowed / Borderless
  • Current BIOS / older BIOS version
  • Overlays of any apps On / Off
  • The temperatures of my components are all within the normal range
  • New RAM
  • Other monitors with 240 hz
  • All drivers for all components up to date / older drivers also tried
  • Different mouse polling rate
  • Different mouse
  • Resizable Bar is automatically on, I don't think I can deactivate it anywhere either

Now after months I finally had the idea to deactivate HAGS (Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling) and I couldn't believe my eyes. Everything runs incredibly smooth and the micro stutters are gone.

The big problem now is that you have to have HAGS activated to activate Frame Generation... In some games, not even Dlss 2.0 works. Does anyone know the problem and could solve it? Games like Immortals of Avenuen are hardly playable without Dlss... Unfortunately, you also have to restart the PC when changing the HAGS setting, which would be extremely annoying... especially since more and more games with Dlss 3.0 are coming out.

This is interesting, will try on my G834JY affected by heavy stuttering with old dx9-11 fullscreen exclusive games in particular also in Ultimate dGPU only... New games like A plague tail: Requiem DX12 run amazangly well instead and G-Sync seems to be work fine there. This is driving me nuts....

Even Ufo ghosting online test fails miserably and can't sync stable at 240Hz with Edge browser 😞

Didn't work... still stutterfest with this 4090 laptop:

It's like everything is forced in window mode from a performance POV, and G-Sync is not even working.

read this https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/micro-stutters-fix-real-or-fake/m-p/1010704#M205498 \

and turn OFF Ultra Low Latency in nvidia control panel turn off Gsync and Vsync and turn off Nvidia reflex

if you get stutters in games you must check you max TDP usage if your GPU use more power your CPU can be in limited power mode and that cam make stutters in games

i am sure i saw my post https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/micro-stutters-fix-real-or-fake/m-p/1010704#M205498

and there you can see that is better in the most case to use HAGS but you must turn OFF Ultra low latency mode in Nvidia Control pannel and also dont use Nvidia Reflex in the games

another thing is that i make some test whit HAGS and in reality i get better FPS whit HAGS on but if you turn on Nvidia reflex and Ultra low latency mode on the stutters and the problem start ... so try to test your system only whit HAGS on becouse in most games i get benefits from it

and if you wont to get lower latency just cap your FPS and try to not use your GPU more than 97% after this the latency can be double

i cap my FPS in warzone and in the most time my GPU is around 80% usage so i get low latency and i play whitout any stutters or FPS drops also TURN off Gsync and Vsync and cap your fps from the game becouse other fps capper like nvidia control panel and riva tuner add latency

Tearing is a major issue for me, so turning off Gsync is not a viable solution. I'm beginning to think that the problem lies with the laptop itself, as there are numerous similar complaints on the forum.

With my FPS capped at 160 and a maximum GPU usage of 85%, I still experience micro stutters when HAGS is enabled. Interestingly, disabling all latency-reducing features results in significantly smoother gameplay.

Can you pass UFO Ghosting online test with stable results?

UFO Test: Ghosting (testufo.com)

It fails here with constant stuttering... Did you also try older DX9-11 games? I see micro-lags even in MAME emulator for 2D games when scrolling (was butter smooth with G-Sync on with the other PC GL703GS with 1070).

The strange thing here is that demanding DX12 games like A Plague Tale: Requiem run flawlessly and I can notice also G-Sync (my eyes can see the diff. after many years on the other gaming laptop). No micro stuttering or anything else (except sporadic traversal stuttering many 3D games have, sigh....). The problem is with everything else: old games DX9-11, browser + UFO Ghosting test, emulators like MAME etc.... I'm confused...
