My old Dell laptop died after four years and after looking at a few laptop review sites, I decided to order a Asus ROG Strix GL753. I wanted a nice big bright display, good build quality, and something powerful enough to last me four years. It fit just under my price range and it not being quite as powerful as the top end laptops is ok with me.
My laptop has yet to arrive but I made the possible mistake of reading user reviews from Amazon. There was a distressing number of 1 star reviews, with a lot of people complaining about the computer simply failing to function days or weeks after purchase. Other people complained about odd colored spots on the monitor, track pad problems, overheating, the left speaker not working, and a system slower than promised.
The laptop is supposed to arrive in the next day or two and I'm worried I've made a horrible mistake. I'm looking for anyone who has the laptop who can give me some tips or share their experiences. Some questions I have:
1. I've heard lots of concerns about updating drivers and that triggering problems. Should I update when I first get the laptop? What should I update first and in what way? Any tips?
2. I've heard someone saying that the hard drive light is constantly on and the machine is slow until you turn off a setting called "Superfetch" that is supposed to speed up frequently used programs. Anyone have experience with this?
3. Any other general tips with the system? How hot and loud is it in general so I have a good mental benchmark to keep in mind? How's the screen?
Thank you so much in advance for any responses.
