GTX 460m, 63 degrees IDLE temp When "Prefer Maximum Performance" is Enabled!

Hı guys,
Since using R300 drivers starting from 301.42, i get random and absurd TDRs while my GPU is not throttled and when it's quite idle with simple tasks like browsing, typing text in Ms Word etc. I'm trying to get rid of silly TDRs by means of suggested trick here:

But the problem is, when i disable "adaptive" power management and select "maximum performance", and if Firefox or WMP is running (the setting is applied to those programs as global you know), my idle GPU temp is almost 63 degrees (celcius) as a result of having clock speed at 675 mhz and VDDC voltage at 0.9620 as maxed out:

14404

If i turn back to "adaptive", my idle temp is about 50 degrees which is fine and my GPU can downclock as low as 0.8120v and 50 mhz GPU clock as expected.

That implies about 13 degrees difference because of that setting by means of keeping Windows stable without TDR (still testing).

Is 63 degrees of idle temp too much because of that power management setting?

What do you think?

My maximum (gaming) temp is about 82 degrees with no crash or reboot anyways.

Any comment is appreciated, Thanks in advance.

No,it's normal!
Because...
Generally running the system at high loading,GPU maximum is about of 100 degrees
Of course, add cooling solution will be enhance GPU life....

This is safe i recon. Its just with this setting your card will run at maximum while running 3D apps regardless of GPU usage.
I am running mine on same settings on G74SX but have idle at 30-40C. Yet G74SX have better cooling than G53.
Enlight me!

The 460M will run hotter than the newer designs. My 560M runs ~50C idle under LINUX (whose thermal/power management is nowhere near as good).
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!

Well this is odd, mine runs 28-29 C at idle in room temp at 21-23C (i was testing it lil bit 2day) 🙂 When stressed it stabilise itself on 71-76 C under furmark..
Enlight me!

Thanks all to you guys, based on my further testing, the issue is still persisted. If i turn off "prefer maximum performance" and go back to "adaptive" power management, my little G53JW will idle at about 49-50 degrees BUT if i choose "prefer maximum performance" and if a GPU-aware app is open like Firefox, the clocks will be maxed as well as shader and memory clock, and the temp hits 63-64 degress!

But during gaming, it won't exceed 82 degrees which causes no major stability issues like BSOD or reboot. I know G53 series are smaller and running hotter than big brothers (G74,73 and 75) but still i'm not sure whether i should concern?

Note that i'm choosing "prefer maximum performance" setting in crappy R300 (301.42 and later) driver series just for the sake of keeping my computer stable to avoid random TDRs during idle times. BTW, the room temp is 27 degrees.

Does it cause any problems or any more comment is greatly appreciated???

Thanks again all.

Note that the thread is up-to-date guys! Are my temps OK when i switch to maximum performance setting?

Actually, that technique seem to have solved the random TDR during IDLE times, but fans are much noiser and GPU is hotter due to running at 3D clocks. I don't know 31x.xx drivers still having agressive power management and random TDRs?

Anyone?

Just installed 314.22 and voltages are now a bit higher. How can this be?

My max p0 VDDC is now 0.9700v and min p12 VDDC is 0.8200. Those are higher than problematic 301.42.
Do i need to worry? Can my GPU be damaged?
ASUS G53JW-XA1

@kimi, if nVidia set the voltages, then no you don't have to worry. They stringently test their drivers to ensure safety of the cards. Also, idle temps at 63C when Firefox is open isn't out of line, since it does a lot of GPU work now (much more than it used to). If your system on "Max Performance" idles lower with no programs running, then you should be fine. I would recommend running in Balanced mode, since Balanced can run as fast as Max Performance, but also does downclocking at idle, which reduces your temps.
